Stewartsville, NJ received just under 1″ of snow on January 6, 2017

Most areas received a dusting overnight in western New Jersey. Friday will remain a cold day with temperatures just barely climbing to near freezing.

The next storm will come up from the south and try to turn north and go up the coast. But it will have this cold dome of high pressure that doesn’t want to move. So it will be a squeeze play. I expect some snow showers over most of western New Jersey that could result in a coating to perhaps 1″ further to the east and south. As you you can see from the NWS snowfall forecast map above, most of the snow will fall to our south and east. Further south some areas of Virginia and NC will receive 6-12″ of snow.

After today’s milder weather it’s back to reality. A storm system moving to our south should come north enough to give western New Jersey some light snow late Thursday into Friday morning. The timing doesn’t look good for the morning rush. the roads are pre-treated well.

I agree with the NWS map above and believe western New Jersey will receive a coating to 1″ with more to the south and east for a change.

Then the big story is we are back to winter temperatures until Tuesday of next week so bundle up!

Winter appears to have one more show for us. Today’s gusty winds are bringing back colder more seasonable weather to western New Jersey. In fact it will be quite chilly tonight and tomorrow. Look for light snow to develop Thursday night and last into Friday. Initially temperatures will be cold enough for all snow but on Friday we will go above freezing so if it continues it should mix with some rain, especially in southern locations. Plus the March sun will go to work on surfaces and prevent any additional accumulation.

For western New Jersey I like the idea of a coating to an inch or two. This will mostly be on colder, grassy surfaces. I don’t anticipate any additional accumulation once sunup is reached on Friday.

For those ready for Spring, we should get a real nice preview of it next week!

Radar20151009-1525

As of 3:30, rain and some thundershowers is moving in from the NW. Keep an eye to the sky for the next few hours.

Radar20151009-1048

A cold front will be approaching the area later today. Some pre-frontal showers have already popped up and should be entering western New Jersey within the next hour.

After that we should have a little break then more activity later this afternoon. Don’t be surprised if you even hear a rumble of thunder! Yes it’s October but it does happen occasionally. Look for the afternoon showers to start as early as 2 pm but hopefully should be clear of the area in time for Friday night HS football!

Temperatures this morning are already above freezing slightly and we have an E-SE wind. When the snow arrives (very light snow just entered western New Jersey as of 9 am) the lower atmosphere will cool down slightly. But the March sun will penetrate the clouds and help to warm up paved surfaces.

As you can see in the above radar, precipitation initially will be very light and intermittent.

northeast

I wider view of radar show opening in the coverage in Southern PA but more moisture to the west.

We are still under a winter weather advisory until 8 pm tonight. The NWS is still forecasting 4-6″ for our area. My forecast still stands at 1-3.” More snow will fall but not accumulate. More will accumulate at higher elevations (generally above 750 ft). Also if it continues to snow moderately beyond 4-5 pm that snow may start sticking on untreated surfaces as well. But the storm should start winding down in our area from 6-9 pm.

If you feel like it, go out to your local Rita’s for a free water ice today!! lol

If will feel more spring like tomorrow with partly sunny skies and high temperatures in the upper 40’s and low 50’s.

Western New Jersey woke up to another chilly morning with temperatures in the 20’s. Partly sunny skies today with highs just over 40. Clouds will increase tonight and snow will develop across the area between 6-10 am on Friday. Wet snow should continue at various rates throughout the day ending in the early evening from 6-10 pm. If this were 1-2 months ago I would be forecasting 3-6.”  But it’s not – it’s late March and in fact the first day of Spring. Can it snow in late March and early April? Sure can and it has in the past. Does the snow stick around? Nope.

The National Weather Service has issues a winter weather advisory for tomorrow. The NWS is forecasting 3-6″ of snow as seen above. I believe most lower elevations of western New Jersey will only see 1-3″ on Friday and that will be mostly on colder surfaces like grass, car tops, untreated surfaces and shady areas. When the snow falls during the day it will only stick in the above areas. For it to stick during the day everywhere it has to be heavy snow. And we may in fact have a few heavier periods on Friday.

We will be getting a good 1/2″ of liquid from this storm. Elevated areas (say above 750′) will see more snow in the order of 3-6″

If I see any significant changes I will update this post. I will be busy for the next few evenings so updates may be limited.

Surface

Now that the cold front has passed through Western New Jersey, temperatures will start to tumble this afternoon as the winds increase. So far I recorded a high wind gust of 33. I’m sure there are higher readings in open elevated areas.

7day

Tonight and tomorrow will make us remember that the season is still Winter. We will have overnight lows in the mid 20’s with breezy conditions. Tomorrow will continue on that same note with highs in the mid perhaps upper 30’s. This is over 10 degrees below normal. Another cold night Wednesday night but the winds should let up by Thursday morning. Thursday will feature sunny skies and a little warmer in the mid 40’s.

Then our attention turns to Friday. A storm will approach the east coast south of us. The worse of the storm looks to stay to our south but its looking more and more like this storm will impact us. We may be cold enough for snow in the beginning of the storm on Friday. But now that it’s mid March and the snow will be falling during the day, I do not anticipate any accumulations at this time. Later in the day it may warm up enough to change to rain.

As it looks now we should remain below normal temperature wise through the end of the month so even though Spring is near, it’s not here yet temperature wise…

Above is a graphical display of snowfall reports received by the NWS for yesterday’s storm. See my previous post about more storm reports. Many locations received 6-8” with less up north.

Western New Jersey residents woke up to another very cold morning. Many temperatures were in the low single digits. Many school districts are on a delayed opening once again. And most side roads are snow covered but hopefully plowed by now.

I’m pleased to report we should now be in a quiet period with warming! Yes today will be cold (20 degrees below normal!) as will tonight but we should have mostly sunny skies well into next week with high temperatures in the 40’s starting on Sunday!

And don’t forget to “spring” your clocks forward Saturday night.

Western New Jersey did see some light snow yesterday but it didn’t amount to too much. Most places only received a dusting or a coating. Early risers this morning may have also seen some flurries as well as cold temperatures in the low teens.

image

Friday will feature clouds and sun and a few passing flurries with highs in the mid 20’s. Tonight and Sunday morning will be cold once again with lows in the single digits. Saturday will be mostly sunny with highs in the 20’s. Sunday will see light snow developing in the afternoon and into the evening and overnight. At this point this is looking very similar to the last storm we received where we started off as snow and some areas finished as sleet and freezing rain. So look for a small accumulating snow later on Sunday and Sunday night, possibly changing to a wintry mix and ending early Monday. It may actually warm up enough by Wednesday to give us rain. More details on all of this over the weekend.

Skies are already mostly cloudy this morning. Look for skies to remain mostly cloudy with high temperatures in the mid 40’s. A few rain showers may sneak in late in the day and early this evening. Look for a steadier rain to arrive mid to late evening and continue overnight.

The rain looks to arrive in two batches. The first will be this evening and overnight. Then there appears to be a break during the day (could be some drizzle and showers) with a steadier rain returning in the afternoon into the overnight.

Look for about 1” rain from this event. Sunday looks drier at this point. The next chance of precipitation will be around Tuesday. Could be a significant storm or either rain/snow. I’ll keep you posted!
