Details on the wintry weather for late Monday night and Tuesday are coming into focus. I’m expecting 1-3″ for western New Jersey. The lower end will be in southern areas and the upper end further to the north and west. Some sleet can mix in at times on Tuesday.

Timing: Look for light snow to arrive before sun-up on tuesday. the snow will be light and perhaps intermittent at times, especially in the afternoon.

Looking ahead to our next winter weather maker on Thursday, it may be another swing and a miss. This will truly be a storm that will intensify rapidly when it hits the Atlantic ocean. Unfortunately it appears to be south of us with the intensification happening when it gets east of our area. We may see some light snow showers depending on the exact track. Details as we get closer.

Any early morning sunshine today will be replaced with increasing and thickening clouds. Light snow should break out in southern areas by mid to late afternoon. If the precipitation arrives early enough it could even fall as light rain initially.

As seen in the map above, most of the snowfall should be in southern locations primarily south of I-78. Snow should be over just after midnight and long gone by tomorrow’s AM rush.

Wednesday will be a blustery and chilly day as colder air gets blown into our area as the storm departs. There could even be a snow shower or two at times but nothing important. Thursday is the transition day before we start another impressive warm-up for the weekend.

NWS snow forecast Wed AM

Today will be slightly warmer than yesterday. The warmer air will be accompanied by more wind and even a brief snow or rain shower. Monday will be seasonably cool then the fun begins on Tuesday.

An arctic cold front will pass through the area later on Tuesday. A low pressure system is forecast to form along the front and move quickly by. This may enhance the precipitation along the arctic front. On Tuesday we may see some light snow that could change to rain during the day as we warm up slightly before the frontal passage. Then the front will pass and the low pressure will come into play. We should see any rain or mixed precipitation change back to snow. Right now is looks like a nuisance event in the order of a coating to 2″.

Behind this front will be bone chilling weather similar to a week ago. High temperatures on Wednesday will struggle to get out of the teens and near 0 overnight. Thursday will be even colder during the day with temperature struggling to get out of the single digits! We should warm up a little by next weekend.

Coating of snow overnight in Stewartsville, NJ

While driving home last night seeing the moon out and partly cloudy skies I knew it was going to be hard for the snow to our south to make its way this far north.

But it eventually made its way up north to some locations with a light coating of snow

The week ahead will start off cold but return to seasonable levels of temperature and precipitation

7 Day NWS forecast

There is a slight chance of snow or rain showers Thursday night into Friday morning.

Then all attention turns to the potential for a more important start next weekend. The weather models are starting to show this potential but it is still a week away and much can change between now and then. I will keep an eye on it.

Winter weather advisory in effect for this evening into Tuesday AM

Much colder day today compared to recent weather. The colder weather trend looks to continue this week after a roller coaster ride Tuesday into Wednesday.

Radar as of 12:20 pm

A warm front is moving towards our area that will bring warmer weather Tuesday. The leading edge of this is causing some light snow in central PA. If this hold together it will be in western NJ from 3-6 pm this evening.

The air is VERY dry and a lot of this may dry up before reaching our area. It may be one of those situation that the radar looks worse that what actually falls from the sky

NWS snow forecast

Look for some light snow/flurries this evening and then again late at night. Expect a coating to 1″. The greatest chances for 1″ is to the north. Then warmer air arrives overnight and should change over to a cold light rain by morning. Then the rain should let up for most of the day Tuesday until a cold front moves through in the evening. Expect another period of rain with the cold front.

Then back to typically January cold the rest of the week. All eyes will be on the potential of a coastal storm late Saturday into Sunday

A fast moving storm will bring light snow to northern New Jersey Tuesday

The light snow could start before the morning commute and last a good portion of the day. Look for a coating to 1″ from I-78 on southward. North of there look for 1-2.” Temperatures tomorrow will not be as cold in the afternoon and its possible some areas, especially in the south, could see a little light rain at times in the afternoon.

The State pre treated the roads with brine as of yesterday so hopefully they will be fine as long as the rate of precipitation doesn’t get too heavy.

Updates as the situation changes.

After today’s milder weather it’s back to reality. A storm system moving to our south should come north enough to give western New Jersey some light snow late Thursday into Friday morning. The timing doesn’t look good for the morning rush. the roads are pre-treated well.

I agree with the NWS map above and believe western New Jersey will receive a coating to 1″ with more to the south and east for a change.

Then the big story is we are back to winter temperatures until Tuesday of next week so bundle up!

Light snow approaching from the SW

Light snow approaching from the SW

If you have any outdoor chores to do today is the day. There is some very light snow or flurries approaching from the SW. Look for them to arrive late afternoon into the early evening. It shouldn’t amount to too much but some areas may receive a dusting.

Wednesday will be a transition day as the next front will move through later in the day and into the evening ushering in the coldest air of the season. More details on that tomorrow…

The first snow of December is in the books. This is our second snowfall of the fall. 1/2″ was recorded in Stewartsville, NJ. I’ve seen reports of as much as 1.5″ in High Point NJ.

Take a picture if you like snow on the ground becasue it won’t last long. Rain returns later Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Then colder air arrives later in the week.

stormtotalsnowweb1

A relatively weak system will be moving into the western New Jersey area later Sunday evening into the overnight hours and Monday morning. Initially temperatures may be warm enough to produce some cold rain showers. As the precipitation picks up a little and the atmosphere cools down, we should see this change over to light wet snow.

How much? Right now it looks like a coating to 1″ in most of the area. Further to the north and in elevated areas (> 1000′) you may see 1-2″ of snow.

namsnow-2-900x400

Certainly not a crippling event BUT it will be the first event of the season and Monday morning commutes are stressful enough as it is.

But it is December and will be seeing more of this potential in the weeks ahead. The rest of the mid week will feature on and off light chances of rain. Then the coldest air of the season arrives late Thursday into next weekend. The weather pattern looks to turn active! Who’s happy about that?
