It certainly won’t feel like late March today – more like January! Gusty winds, cold wind chills and perhaps even some snow showers!!

Low temperature forecast Monday morning

And the hunt for Spring 2022 continues. If you don’t like today, you’re not going to like Monday either. Overnight lows the next two nights are going to be in the upper teens and low 20’s! If you turned on your outdoor water faucets, you might want to turn them off!

Monday high temperature forecast

Monday temperatures will not get out of the teens. The gusty winds will make it feel even colder. Normal highs this time of year are the mid 50’s.

Temperatures will slowly start to recover on Tuesday with more seasonable temperatures on Thursday and beyond. With the warmer temperatures come increasing chances of rain.

The Storms Prediction Center has upgraded our entire area to a slight risk of severe weather later today. Previously the greatest threat of severe weather looked to be in PA.

Future radar forecast for later this afternoon

Even though the dynamics of possible severe weather has increased, it could be a lot worse. The line looks to weaken as it moves east later this afternoon and be a broken line instead of a solid line.

We shouldn’t receive more than a 1/10″ of rain overall today unless you find yourself under one of the heavier cells.

The greatest threat will be from strong gusty winds

SPC has SW parts of the area in marginal risk of severe weather

Our Friday trend hasn’t been too great for the last 2 months. Measurable rain on 9 of them. Today will continue the streak.

There have already been a few rumbles of thunder this morning. Look for this to continue on an off today. The strongest storms looks to occur in the 3 – 6 pm timeframe and could cause havoc with the evening commute.

Our weather will clear out for Saturday but it will be much cooler and windy. Look for highs near 60 with a stiff NW wind gusting into the 30’s at times.

We’ll continue our parade of fast moving weather systems with the next one arriving on Sunday. The cool weather will remain so there could even be some mixed precipitation in the northern area.

Spring arrives later this afternoon at 5:58 pm. If you partake in water ice don’t forget Rita’s offers a free one today only!

Get out and enjoy today’s weather as tomorrow will be a rainy day. Rain could arrive as early morning hours on Thursday and be moderate to heavy at times

It now looks like we could get 1-1.5″ of rain on Thursday. Showers could linger into Friday morning then turning windy with scattered rain or snow showers Friday afternoon. Wind continues on Saturday but then Sunday turns into a nice day and the better half of the weekend.

7day

Hopefully everyone in western New Jersey remembered to spring forward their clocks and to also change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

The main message I want to get across today is we have been so warm and above normal, many of us are thinking this is the norm. Sadly it’s not. So when we get a normal temperature day (upper 40’s for western New Jersey) it will feel like parka weather. Combine that with clouds, wind and rain will make people remember it’s March. We should get about 1/2″ of needed rain (it’s been dry lately). The rain will not totally clear out until later Tuesday.

Luckily the cold will not last too long and we will be back above normal in the upper 50’s Tuesday and the 60’s Wednesday and Thursday!

Remember the Ides of March!

Crocus bloom in Stewartsville NJ in early March 2016

Crocus bloom in Stewartsville NJ in early March 2016

While I’m not advising anyone to put away their winter coats yet, warmer weather is on the way for western New Jersey this week. We may even have record breaking warmth on Wednesday!

One thing I did want to mention with all this warmth is people will want to head to their local nurseries and start planting things. It’s WAY TOO EARLY for that. For this area the farmer’s use MAY 10th as the last date of frost or freeze that’s safe for outdoor planting. That’s two whole months from now!

So what can you do? Clean up leaves, pick up brush, clean windows, stuff like that.

7day

Normal high temperature for this time of year is 46. Enjoy!

7Day

Western New Jersey was able to escape freezing temperatures this morning due to a wind that never died down and cloudy skies most of the night. However another cold night is forecast tonight. In fact it’s forecast to be a few degrees colder than last night. So please protect any sensitive plants if possible.

Snow showers were experienced in many areas of western New Jersey yesterday with the cold air in place. Today, while still below normal, should not see any showers but temperatures will remain below normal with windy conditions.

Next week should see temperatures closer to normal for this time of year. Still no heat waves in site at this point. If anything it will remain at or slightly below normal temperature wise into early May.

It may not feel like it yet today but warmer air is on the way to western New Jersey area. A warm front is having a very hard time making its way east today. As you can see in the above temperature map, warmer temperatures are to our west in western PA. I don’t think it will get here until later in the afternoon or early evening just before the cold front arrives. Expect some light rain showers later this afternoon. Some thunderstorm could be in extreme southern NJ and points further south.

7day

Take note of the high temperatures expected for the next several days. We should see high’s in the 60’s and perhaps some days near 70! So hopefully we can close the door on the cold and damp 30’s and 40’s during the day starting tomorrow.

Yesterday’s storm certainly over-performed as far as I’m concerned. While I knew more snow would fall that would accumulate, I didn’t expect the longevity of the intensity that resulted in more snow accumulating than I forecasted. Stewartsville received 4″ of wet snow. Here are some additional accumulations in the western New Jersey area:

Saturday will be the better of the two this weekend weather wise. Look for partly sunny skies with temperatures near 50. There will be a breeze which combined with the temperature and sun should help to melt most if not all that fell yesterday. There could be a brief rain shower this evening as colder air arrives in the region. Sunday will be sunny but cold for this time of year. Colder than normal will continue into the new week until a nice warm-up arrives on Wednesday, albeit with a chance of rain.

Wet snow continues across western New Jersey on Friday afternoon, the first day of Spring. The back edge of the snow is now visible on radar near Harrisburg and moving in this direction. Furthermore in the last 15 minutes I’m starting to notice some gaps in the radar to our west so the steady snow should become more intermittent as the afternoon wears on.

As of noon, Stewartsville received 1.2″ of snow. At this point I suspect we will receive around the top end of my 1-3″ forecast.
