The year may not quite be over yet but I think its OK to look back at the weather of 2014 from a high level graphical point of view:

2014-2

Extremes above show a high of 91 and a low of –3. 39” of rain. All of these weather stats were recorded on my Davis VantageVUE (rooftop) and recorded and displayed via WUnderground. As such, since the rain gauge is not heated, frozen precip will be missing so the actual precip is higher.

2014-1

I love looking at the year in a line chart above. It shows nice correlation on some of the data. For instance the high wind gust in January occurred at the same time as the low pressure on the same day.

Looking ahead today, New Years Eve, will be similar to yesterday. Partly cloudy, a light breeze and chilly with highs only reaching around freezing. Tonight if you are planning on being outside at all around midnight expect temperatures in the lower 20’s so bundle up!

Similar weather on Friday and increasing clouds on Saturday with a cold rain later in the afternoon into the evening. There could be some sleet mixed in at the beginning in the normally colder sections to the north and west. Sunday could see some shower chances. Colder weather returns as we all head back to work and school.

Happy New Year!

After a few days off, we return to more seasonable weather. Highs will be in the30’s to near 40. New Year’s Eve will be colder with lows in the 20’s for any revelers. The next chance of precipitation will be Friday night into Saturday morning. If the precipitation arrives earlier enough it could be frozen but has the potential to go over to plain rain.

Western New Jersey finds its Christmas Eve weather on the warm, foggy and moist side this morning. Look for more of the same to continue today along with the wind picking up. IN fact it might get down right windy at times tonight into tomorrow with wind gusts to near 40 mph.

In the last 24 hours we picked up 0.21” of rain. We could pick up another 1/2” of rain and perhaps locally more.

This will certainly go down as one of the warmest Christmas’s from a temperature point of view. A cold front will come thru early Christmas morning but no real true cold air is behind this front. We will need to wait until around the New Year for a true pattern change and colder weather and potential for snow.

I may not have a post tomorrow since it’s Christmas. If not I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas!

Just in case anyone had any hope, the chances for a white Christmas this year are slim:

Above is a computer model forecast for snow on the ground Christmas day. The best we can hope for is as cooler air comes in after the rain on Christmas Eve and Day we *may* see some flurries or snow showers.

Today will be more of the same “no sun” weather. Temperatures will stay in the 30’s. We may see some drizzle or very light rain this evening or later in the day. Tuesday will feature more showers with temperatures rising into the 40’s. Christmas Eve will feature more showers with periods of rain moving in as the day progresses with temperatures in the 50’s! But it will be breezy if not windy conditions by Christmas day.

Happy first day of winter! The winter solstice doesn’t occur until 6:03 pm eastern this evening. So what does this mean? We’ll this is the southern most our sun travels in the sky. It’s also close to the shortest day of the year. From this point forward we will be getting more and more sunlight each day. But don’t get out the sun block yet. It will be a slow change up until March when we hit the first day of Spring!

More of the same weather for today. Some very, very light snow flurries surprised us yesterday in the morning. Today will be partly to mostly cloud with high’s near 40. Even though winter arrives tonight the weather won’t feel winter like for a while. Temperatures will be above normal into Christmas day with rain and wind likely, especially Christmas eve and day.

Today will be mostly cloudy although there may be some peeks of sun. Temperatures will be seasonable with highs around 40. Look for more of the same on Saturday and Sunday. The storm mentioned earlier will stay to our south.

Then we warm up a little next week which is not favorable for snow for Christmas. In fact it looks like a windy rain for Christmas eve as seen in the above graphic. With any luck we will have colder weather on Christmas day and perhaps some flurries or snow showers to set the mood!

18. December 2014 · Comments Off on Weekend Storm Threat Lessens Then Wet Christmas? · Categories: weather discussion · Tags:

Seasonable weather will continue into the weekend with partly cloudy skies. The weekend storm appears to be minor and stay mostly to our south. Can’t rule out a stray snow shower Saturday evening/night of Sunday morning. Then we warm up again and a storm system looks to go to our west on Wednesday. If this happens we will have a warm, wet and windy Christmas eve. The pattern will eventually turn much colder and wintry. This could come as soon as the end of the year.

17. December 2014 · Comments Off on Nice Wednesday · Categories: weather discussion · Tags:

We will have a very nice Wednesday by December standards. High temperatures today will climb to near 50 degrees under party cloudy skies. The only fly in the ointment will be an increasing breeze.

We picked up 0.21” of rain yesterday afternoon and evening.

Cooler and more seasonable weather will be the norm Thursday into the weekend. The potential storm system for this weekend looks to be more minor in nature if it impacts us at all. But looking less likely for a White Christmas this year – but we’ll see!

16. December 2014 · Comments Off on Rain Showers Today · Categories: weather discussion · Tags:

Look for rain showers to move into the area around lunch time today. They should last into the evening. Rainfall totals should be in the 1/4” range.

Tomorrow will be a nice day for mid-December with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures approaching 50 degrees. But the breeze may make it feel a little cooler. Thursday will continue the breeze with temperatures around 41. The breeze dies down on Friday with a high in the upper 30’s.

The all eye turn to the potential for a weekend snowstorm I mentioned earlier. Several models are showing the potential. The timing looks to be later Saturday into Sunday. As always the exact track and timing will determine precipitation types so stay tuned!

Sure there is the magic of the poetic White Christmas although it doesn’t happen too often at this location. The above image is courtesy of the NWS New York. For our area it shows a historical average of 26-40% change.

But one of the long range computer models that has been doing quite well in the long term, has been consistently (last 3 days) showing a wintry type of storm for next weekend. It looks to be a rain/show event. Even if it’s rain for us, I want to point this out now since this is the last weekend before Christmas. The timing right now is Saturday night into Sunday. That can and probably will change as we draw closer to the event. So keep this in mind as you plan out last minute activities and travel around that time.

Further down the road colder air looks to arrive by the end of the month.
