Last sunrise of 2018 with high clouds rapidly increasing

Early morning sunshine is rapidly fading away behind increasing clouds. Rain from our next system should be in our area by mid-day.

NWS rain forecast

Our area looks to receive an additional 3/4″ – 1.25″ of rain this afternoon, evening into the early morning of January 1, 2019. This rain has already made for a top 5 in precipitation for 2018 for many locations in our area. Reading, PA is the wettest ever; Allentown top 3.

7 Day NWS forecast

After this afternoon’s rain, we should see a mild day to start off 2019 but winds will pick up and become gusty in the afternoon. If you plan on enjoying the unseasonable warmth please do so in the morning if possible.

Cooler air returns for the balance of the week but it will be slightly above normal. More rain looks to return on Friday.

Happy New Year everyone!

Flash Flood Watch

Most sections of western New Jersey saw and heard a good amount of rain and thunderstorms in the wee hours of this morning. Stewartsville received 1.04″ of new rain as of 7:30 am today. More rain has fallen since then. All of this rain has resulted in a Flash Flood Watch for the entire area.

NE Radar Loop

As of mid-day the good news is most of the heavier rain has moved thru extreme western New Jersey and will be out of all of northern NJ soon. As you can see in the radar loop above there appears to be a break in the precipitation. How long will it last? I suspect we will see rain returning by mid to late afternoon.

Weather Outlook this weekend

Our overall forecast from 8 am this morning until Sunday morning is more heavy rains possible with flash flooding possible.

1-2 Day Precip Total forecast

The above map shows extreme western New Jersey forecast to receive about another 1.50″ of rain from Saturday morning until Monday morning. Sections further to the east could be closer to 2″

And tomorrow will be just as hot as today with a little more humidity

Our only relief will be scattered afternoon or evening thundershowers which will be few and far between

SPC has placed all of western New Jersey in a slight risk

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded all of western New Jersey to a slight risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon. The primary threat will be wind, rain and possibly small hail.

There is a line of storms in western PA heading in our direction now. If any storm or showers survive, they could impact our area by late morning. Otherwise look for additional storms mid to late afternoon.

6.2″ in Stewartsville as of 3 pm

Everything is on track for snow in most areas in western New Jersey. There has not been as much snow in far northern locations

NWS Snow Forecast

The updated NWS snow forecast above is more in line with my thinking.

Experimental Storm Severity Index

All of western New Jersey is in the bulls eye of the next (fourth) major storm in the month of March. Has kismet that it starts on the official start of Spring!

In looking at the potential severity of this storm in the above experimental graphic from the NWS, you can see most of western New Jersey is in the Major category.

Snow start timing

Here is a graphic showing the start time of the precipitation. Keep in mind that today, Tuesday the precipitation will be light compared to tomorrow. There’s also a good chance the precipitation today will be a wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain. As the second storm approaches on Wednesday is when we will see predominately snow.

NWS Snow Forecast

The above graphic does a nice job of showing how much snow for western New Jersey is forecast. Note that more snow is forecast to the south and east.

This will be once again one of those storms that features:

  • heavy wet snow
  • snow accumulating on colder surfaces more than roads
  • snow may not accumulate on roads during the day until heavy snow falls

Winds will also become gusty as Wednesday progresses. Power issues are possible from either the wind, wet snow or both.

Sorry this is a dated image from 11 am. I was about to post then the phone rang. It shows the bands of snow continuing. Another band approaching western New Jersey.

Eastern New Jersey and the Jersey shore and NYC are getting pounded. These spots should easily get 1 foot of snow…
