Slight risk of severe weather Monday

An active weather day is on the way for Monday courtesy of the very mild weather we are experiencing. All the warm weather is going to lead to the potential for some severe weather as a cold front approaches the area this evening. The biggest threat will be strong gusty winds.

A line of showers with a few embedded thunderstorms is expected to cross the area late this afternoon into this evening.

Wind advisory later today

Speaking of strong winds, a wind advisory will be in effect this afternoon into this evening. Look for windy SW winds this afternoon that could gust up to 50 mph. When the front goes through this evening, winds will shift into the NW and continue to gust to 50 mph. Look for even high wind gusts if you receive a strong storm!

March is known for its winds and wild temperature swings. Much cooler and more seasonable weather will return starting Tuesday. We could even see some wet snow flakes on Wednesday!

Spring fans remember that this weekend is when we Spring forward our clocks.

Enhanced risk for severe weather Tuesday

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed our entire area in a slight risk for severe weather on Tuesday. Furthermore, southern location and to the south are under an enhanced risk. There are very few times in a year where a portion of our area is in an enhanced risk.

The best time for the storm tomorrow will be the afternoon. It will be another hot and humid day with high temperatures in the upper 80’s

The possible severe weather is a result of a strong cool front that will be moving through. Wednesday looks to be a cooler and less humid day.

Humidity looks to return on Thursday so enjoy it while it lasts!

Several areas in western New Jersey topped out at 90 degrees yesterday, Thursday. We’re in line to accomplish that again today with similar weather. If the heat hold for Saturday, that will be our third day and count as the Summer’s first heat wave.

With summer heat and humidity comes the potential for thunderstorms. Saturday looks like the best chances for us. The SPC has placed our entire area in a slight risk for severe weather tomorrow.

SPC has SW parts of the area in marginal risk of severe weather

Our Friday trend hasn’t been too great for the last 2 months. Measurable rain on 9 of them. Today will continue the streak.

There have already been a few rumbles of thunder this morning. Look for this to continue on an off today. The strongest storms looks to occur in the 3 – 6 pm timeframe and could cause havoc with the evening commute.

Our weather will clear out for Saturday but it will be much cooler and windy. Look for highs near 60 with a stiff NW wind gusting into the 30’s at times.

We’ll continue our parade of fast moving weather systems with the next one arriving on Sunday. The cool weather will remain so there could even be some mixed precipitation in the northern area.

SPC shows marginal risk of severe weather today

The Storm Prediction Center has our entire area in a marginal risk for severe weather later today and tonight. A weak cold front will be approaching and moving through the area later today and tonight. This will produce some scattered thunderstorms later today and tonight. At this time they don’t look to be very strong or in a squall line. Instead they look scattered. But keep in mind any thunderstorm can turn strong and deadly quickly. The old adage “when thunder roars, head indoors” is good advice.

We did have another heat wave as of yesterday. Tuesday was our third day in a row of high temperatures hitting 90 or better. Today will be close but we may stay just shy of the 90 degree mark. Even if the temperature doesn’t hit 90 the humidity will certainly make it feel that warm if not warmer.

5 Day NWS forecast

After today we should only see high temperatures in the 80’s for at least the next 5 days. Looking longer range temperatures should increase again somewhat later next week perhaps.

SPC severe weather threat for later on this afternoon

The severe weather threat has shifted further south and west for later on today. This takes most of western New Jersey  out of the severe weather threat except for southern and western most sections. This is due to the warm front not making it as far north as originally anticipated. If you haven’t been outside yet this morning it’s not only wet but much cooler with temperatures around 50. It now looks like we will not get much higher than the 60’s today. In fact northern areas could struggle to get to 60.

Further to the south by Philly they will get to 80 with warm and muggy temperatures. This disparity in temperature will fuel the potential for severe weather closer to them later on today as seen in the above map.

After this morning’s rain passes, there could be a break in the rain with only showers at times until later this afternoon. There could even be some breaks in the overcast but mostly cloudy conditions are expected today.

SPC has placed all of western New Jersey in a slight risk

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded all of western New Jersey to a slight risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon. The primary threat will be wind, rain and possibly small hail.

There is a line of storms in western PA heading in our direction now. If any storm or showers survive, they could impact our area by late morning. Otherwise look for additional storms mid to late afternoon.

SPC thunderstorm outlook for today

Scattered showers and thundershowers moved through western New Jersey later yesterday afternoon and evening. Stewartsville recorded 0.03″ of rain.

While today’s high temperature may not hit 90 like yesterday, the increased humidity will make it feel more uncomfortable.

As you can see in the map above, there is an increased chance over yesterday of some thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening. After 4 pm looks to be the starting time.

If you’re not a fan of extreme heat so early in the warm weather season good news is the weekend will feature closer to seasonable temperatures. 70’s for Saturday and 60’s for Sunday.

SPC Thunderstorm chances this afternoon and evening

Welcome to Summer! No it’s not officially summer yet but it sure does feel like it!

With the sudden warm temperatures comes the possibility of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Today is no different. With the sudden heating of the atmosphere is resulting in some instability that could give part of western New Jersey some descent thunderstorm potential later on this afternoon and evening. The best chances are further to the north as seen in the map above.

Friday will be a rinse and repeat of today with perhaps even stronger chances of thunderstorms in the afternoon
