It’s not too often that you see the NWS issue a watch nearly 3 days in advance. Then again the storm that looks to impact our area Wednesday into Thursday morning is no ordinary storm.

First off it’s a busy holiday shopping time of year. And it will be the first major snow storm of not only the season, but in a long time. You remember last winter’s lack of snow, right?

early morning flurries in Stewartsville, NJ leave a dusting of snow

Colder weather has returned to our area. A light dusting of snow could be seen in some part of western New Jersey this morning as some pre-dawn snow flurries moved through the area.

Another weak system will be moving into our area tomorrow and could result in more widespread albeit light snow. Some areas could see a dusting to perhaps 1/2″

The above graphic shows the chances of receiving 0.1″ of snow or more tomorrow. Look for the light snow to arrive as early as sunrise and last in some areas to about mid-day. Not all areas will see this. Any minor accumulations should be mostly on colder surfaces.

Looking longer range above normal temperatures should return Friday into the weekend with highs near or slightly above 50. There is a chance of some rain late Saturday into Sunday. Colder weather returns early next week.

The storm prediction center has placed our entire area in an enhanced risk for severe weather today

It’s not too often that our entire area is placed in an enhanced risk for severe weather.

Enhanced is a 3 on a scal of 0 to 5.

Right now it looks like the timeframe is midday on.

I would expect the NWS to issue a severe thunderstorm watch for this afternoon.

Right now the greatest threat appears to be strong gusty winds, heavy rain and hail. You can never rule out a brief tornado spin up in these situation but that appears to be a low risk.

You can see the area of concern is now in western PA and moving in our direction

right now it appears there could be two or more timeframes to watch. The first will be right around midday. The second will be later in the afternoon and early evening.

radar as of 10:30 Wednesday morning

Everything is still on track with the snow for today. As we mentioned, we are seeing snow showing up on the radar yet it’s not reaching the ground yet. This will continue to be the case today until the snow wins out over the very dry air. Right now my dew point in Stewartsville is 13f with my air temperature of 27f. That’s really dry.

But the snow will win out and mess up everyone’s afternoon commute if you unfortunately had to go to school or work today.

We then need to keep an eye on how fast sleet starts to mix in with the snow and eventually change over to plain rain. I would not be surprised to see sleet start in southern sections by early evening if not before.

I’m sticking with my 1-3″ forecast although right now it looks like we’ll be at the higher end of that range.

Threat for severe weather later today

There continues to be a slight risk of severe weather later today. It will not be an all day rain but rather spotty here and there. If the weather looks threatening, head indoors!

Snow falls on some spring bulbs in Stewartsville, NJ

Everything is still on track this Wednesday morning. Stewartsville has received 1.3″ of snow as of 7:30 am. Look for snow to fall at various rates today. During lighter periods of snow during mid day (if there are any) you might notice road conditions improving a little. Where these heavy snow bands setup will determine how gets the most snow.

My forecast of 4-8″ is still on track with more to the east. Some areas could locally receive more.

NWS Snow Forecast

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect. Winds will become gusty later today and tonight into Thursday morning.

Welcome to Spring 2018!

Early morning risers in western New Jersey are seeing a very nice morning with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 30’s. Unfortunately this will not continue as clouds will arrive quickly and bring light rain by mid day or early afternoon. For elevations above 1000′ this will be wet snow.

By late afternoon or early evening, and light rain falling could start mixing with snow even at the lower elevations. I expect little if any accumulations mostly on colder surfaces. The exception will be elevated areas above 750′ – they might see a coating to 1″ in spots.

Wednesday will be sunny but on the cooler side with highs in the 40’s. Thursday and Friday will be mild days with highs in the 60’s. But showers will be on the increase starting Thursday evening continuing into Friday.

Overnight lows were a bit higher that I forecasted for this morning in western New Jersey but I’m sure no one is going to complain Smile. Today should be a nice day and we should get above freezing with mostly sunny skies.

I found the above graphic online courtesy of the NWS in Pittsburgh. I know there are a lot of people out there that are tired of winter in the north east and ready for spring. While I believe March will start off on the cold side, I look for some relief during the week of March 8th so hang in there!

Tomorrow morning we may see a few snow showers. A storm system is passing to our south. It now looks like it will get *very* close to our area. So we will certainly start off cloudy and see some flurries or snow showers tomorrow morning – especially in sections east and south of here.

We should end the week with mostly sunny skies but temperatures in the 20’s. Next chance of precipitation will be Sunday into Monday. More on that as we get closer.

The NWS has slightly shifted their anticipated “heavier” snow for Wednesday afternoon and night to our south. I agree with this and their amounts. Look for light snow to move into the area Wednesday afternoon. Timing for western new jersey weather at this point is mid afternoon on. Most of the accumulating snow will be after sunset on Wednesday and Wednesday evening.

Back to today, Tuesday. We will see partly to mostly cloudy at times. There is a disturbance in the upper atmosphere that will be moving through. It’s not out of the question to see a flurry or two at times today but nothing significant.

Thursday morning’s commute will be a tricky one as will the Wednesday evening commute. After that attention turns to our south as two storms will be forming off the SE coast. How close they get to us is the big question. Computer models have been trending SLIGHTLY closer to us so this is something we have to keep an eye on for western NJ weather. Right now best chances of seeing any snow over the weekend or on Monday are to our south and east.
