Spring officially arrives on Wednesday late afternoon/evening at 5:58 pm.

The first partial day of Spring 2019 will be a nice one with high temperatures in the low 50’s. Normal high temperature this time of year is 50.

Unfortunately the first full day of spring doesn’t look as nice. In fact it looks to repeat weather that we’ve been seeing a lot of since last year: more rain. A cold front will pass through our area. A storm will form on the southern end of the cold front and move on up to the north east. At first it looked like this storm would mostly stay to the east of our area. Now we may be close enough to it to feel the impact of rain and wind. The worst of it will be to our east. So Thursday is looking like a rainy day with perhaps 2/3 to perhaps 3/4″ or more of rainfall. Friday into Saturday will be cooler and windy. Sunday looks to be the better half of the weekend and kick off spring in a nice way!

After a chilly start this morning, today will be a little warmer than yesterday. There will be plenty of sunshine and light winds. Today’s high temperature should be in the low 50’s. there could be some clouds increasing this afternoon.

Tomorrow’s weather won’t be as rainy as shown above. There could be some clouds in the morning but they should give way to partly sunny skies with high temperatures in the upper 50’s to near 60. What will be nice too as thursday’s morning low should not go below freezing for a change. The showers shown above in the map will not be a possibility for us until very late at night.

Friday will be the warmest day with high temperatures in the low to mid 60’s. With the warmth will be some showers. It doesn’t looks like a lot of rain at this point but we can’t rule out a rumble of thunder or two.

Dry but cooler weather will return for the weekend. This should last into the beginning part of next week.

NWS 7 Day Forecast

After we received about 2/3″ of rain on Spring Forward weekend, we should have seasonable and dry weather this week thu Thursday morning.

Today will be breezy with highs just over 50. Tomorrow and Wednesday will be slightly cooler but fair and dry weather. Our next weather system approaches later on Thursday with some chances of showers but we will get mild temperatures on Friday

Don’t put the cool weather clothing away just yet. Colder air returns for the second half of the weekend into next week. It doesn’t look as cold as the last visit and shouldn’t be around as long hopefully.

Temperature forecast next 10 days

After another frigid morning a slow warm up will begin today. It will be slow at first but anything is better than the 20 degree below normal temperatures we have experienced this week. High temperatures today and tomorrow should get into the mid 30’s. Friday morning will be another cold morning but relief is on the way.

NWS snow forecast

As is often the case, when warmer air arrives the cold air is slow to depart at times. A weak system will be passing to our south on Friday late afternoon/evening. This could give our area some very light snow or snow showers. Right now it looks like a coating to perhaps 1″ in spots. This should be mostly on colder non-paved surfaces.

After that warmer on Saturday with a high near 40. CLouds will be on the increase Saturday late afternoon as some rain moves into the area Sunday morning. In some areas to the far north and west this could start as a little mixed precipitation but this should be mainly a rain event. Sunday’s high temperatures will be in the upper 40’s.

Next week looks to feature high temperatures in the 40’s with perhaps some 50’s by weeks end!

Phil does not see his shadow in 2019. Image courtesy News

In a rare occurrence, the famous weather prognosticator groundhog Phil did not see his shadow this morning. Legend has it this means an early spring for our part of the country.

Don’t get too excited yet – his track record is not stellar. Of course we shouldn’t be too surprised about this. After all he’s a groundhog.

After the recent frigid weather in the east today’s news will certainly be welcome for all the still frozen from the cold weather.

Flood Watch

Flood watch remains in effect and has been extended thru Saturday. Western New Jersey should see a mostly dry day today during the day but some light rain should return this evening and overnight. Saturday will have on and off rain and Sunday will feature some showers and perhaps a thundershower as well.

342 AM EDT Fri May 18 2018

...FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON...

The Flood Watch continues for

* Delaware, northeast Maryland, most of New Jersey, and portions
  of southeast Pennsylvania.

* Through Saturday afternoon

* Periods of moderate to heavy rain will move into southern New
Jersey and the Delmarva this morning. Periods of moderate to
heavy rain will move into Delmarva late tonight through Saturday
morning, then expand northward into southeastern Pennsylvania
and New Jersey Saturday afternoon and night. Additional rainfall
amounts of 1 to 4 inches are expected over the next 72 hours
with the highest totals occurring in Delmarva and far southern
New Jersey. Locally higher amounts over 5 inches are possible in
  slow-moving thunderstorms.

* A variety of flooding types are possible. Low-lying and poor
drainage flooding will be the most common type of flooding to
develop. Flash flooding will also be possible if thunderstorms
repeatedly move over the same locations, especially in urban
areas where rainfall runoff is maximized and where small
creeks and streams respond quickly. Flash flooding occurs
quicker than other types flooding due to the torrential rain
thunderstorms can produce in a short amount of time. Several
days of excessive runoff will eventually lead to a risk of
flooding in larger streams and rivers though the extent of the
flooding will depend on where the heaviest rain falls.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

If you live across the Passaic, Raritan, and Rancocas basins in
New Jersey or the Neshaminy, Schuylkill, and Brandywine basins
across Pennsylvania and Delaware, keep an eye on later river
forecasts. These forecasts, as well as all of our hydrologic
forecasts, can be accessed via our Advanced Hydrologic Prediction
Service website. Those living in areas prone to flooding should
be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

5 Day NWS forecast

After a wild Tuesday weather-wise, we are much calmer, cooler and wetter today. Many locations yesterday reported strong wind gusts (46 in Stewartsville), heavy rain (0.42″ in Stewartsville), hail (1/4″ report in Stewartsville) and more. There was even a tornado warning to our west in eastern PA. There were also other tornado warnings in the region. One was just confirmed in Putnam county.

Today’s showers will continue on and off. Tomorrow we should get a little bit of a break but there is a threat of more rain on Friday. There is some disagreement on how far north the rain will come on Friday. If it gets into western New Jersey, we will easily see an additional 1-2″ of rain. If it stays to our south, less.

SPC severe weather threat for Tuesday afternoon

Lately we seem to be in a pattern of nice weather one day followed by severe weather the next. Same thing will happen today and tomorrow. As you can see in the above map, all of western New Jersey is in a slight risk of seeing some severe weather. The timing for this looks to be from 3 pm to evening time. The line of storm will be coming in from the NW and moving SE. And Tuesday will be even warmer and much more humid than today which will help fuel these storms.

Saturday’s storms missed most of western New Jersey and slide to our south. Let’s see if the same thing happens tomorrow. Regardless we should never let our guard down and keep a weather eye to the sky!

SPC outlook for Saturday

Northern areas of western New Jersey did see some thunderstorms last night while other areas, mainly to the south, hardly saw anything. Stewartsville only picked up .03″ of rain as the storms stayed to the north.

Friday’s weather looks fabulous with sunshine, light winds and low humidity. Unfortunately the weather will change quickly and there will be showers arriving overnight into Saturday morning.

While Saturday doesn’t looks to be a washout, it will feature some showers and thundershower chances. Mother’s Day look more unsettled and cooler with highs in the 60’s

10. May 2018 · Comments Off on Potential For Thunderstorm This Afternoon · Categories: spring, thunderstorms · Tags: , ,

SPC has placed all of western New Jersey in a slight risk

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded all of western New Jersey to a slight risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon. The primary threat will be wind, rain and possibly small hail.

There is a line of storms in western PA heading in our direction now. If any storm or showers survive, they could impact our area by late morning. Otherwise look for additional storms mid to late afternoon.
