28. May 2015 · Comments Off on Severe Thunderstorm Watch Cancelled for NJ · Categories: spring, weather discussion, weather forecast · Tags: , ,

The severe thunderstorm watch previous in effect for today has been cancelled in NJ. Dryer more staple air has moved into the region and should not allow and *severe* thunderstorms to develop the rest of today.

There is a chance for some scattered shower especially to the east and south but most will not see any.

7day

Tonight should actually be not too bad as dryer air moves into the region. We should expect a low in the upper 50’s. The real question is to turn off the A/C or not. Friday will be in the low to mid 80’s but not too humid but probably warm enough for the A/C. Same for Saturday but there could be some late day showers or thundershowers. Sunday right now looks to feature a good chance of shower – let’s hope so since it’s been so dry lately.

There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorm later this afternoon in to the evening as seen in the above map. The primary threat will be from heavy rainfall and winds. Let’s hope we all get some of the much needed rainfall. Hopefully not all at once! 🙂

7Day

Western New Jersey was able to escape freezing temperatures this morning due to a wind that never died down and cloudy skies most of the night. However another cold night is forecast tonight. In fact it’s forecast to be a few degrees colder than last night. So please protect any sensitive plants if possible.

Snow showers were experienced in many areas of western New Jersey yesterday with the cold air in place. Today, while still below normal, should not see any showers but temperatures will remain below normal with windy conditions.

Next week should see temperatures closer to normal for this time of year. Still no heat waves in site at this point. If anything it will remain at or slightly below normal temperature wise into early May.

7Day

The cold front moved through western New Jersey yesterday with some strong winds and a sharp drop in temperature. Stewartsville only recorded 0.08″ of rain but there was a 44 mph wind gust and a steep temperature drop when the front passed.

Today and tomorrow will be noted for unseasonably cold, windy and even a passing rain or wet snow shower (today only). In fact the NWS has issued a Freeze Warning for tonight and a Freeze Watch for tomorrow night. What does this mean? If you jumped the gun a little and planted sensitive plants outdoors, either bring them in tonight or cover them up. Generally it’s not safe to plant until May 10th in western New Jersey area.

The weekend looks better but we will be watching a storm system to our south hopefully stay there.

sfcmap (1)

A fast moving cold front will visit western New Jersey this afternoon on Earth Day 2015 and give all areas strong gusty winds and even potential for thunderstorms with small hail in some areas. The National Weather Service has issues a special weather statement about the potential. The active period as of right now looks to be early afternoon. Showers could last until late afternoon or early evening.

7Day

What we will notice after the cold front passes is a return to colder than normal temperatures into the weekend. Day time highs will be in the 50’s with breezy conditions that will make it feel cooler.

Even though the above tornado watch is not in effect for western New Jersey, it is very close and just to our Southwest. This is an indication the atmosphere has the *potential* to have any thunderstorms be severe and produce an isolated tornado.

A lot of this will depend on whether or not we get any sunshine this afternoon to help increase the building of thunderstorm. Right now just to the south and west of our area sunshine is out and resulting in warming temperature which will help fuel the thunderstorms.

At this time, while any thunderstorm is possible after 4 pm, the most likely period of active weather is from 7 pm – 11 pm this evening

RADAR

Everyone in western New Jersey has woken up to the sound of wind wiped rain this Monday morning. Look for moderate rain to continue until mid morning. Then the rain will turn more showery. In fact there’s a good chance the sun will come out this afternoon!

But don’t put away your rain boots just yet. A cold front will be approaching the region later this afternoon and evening and can bring some additional rain and thunderstorm. These thunderstorm will have the potential to be strong. As you can see in the above map the worse of it will be to our south and west.

7Day

Tuesday looks to be the winner weather wise this week. Then cooler weather and breezy conditions return for the remainder of the week.

Remember: April showers bring May flowers!

7Day

There’s only two bad things I can say about today’s weather in western New Jersey: 1) it won’t last forever and 2) it’s accompanied by dry breezy conditions that will cause us to once again be under a Fire Warning from 3 pm – 8 pm today. So please be careful with any outdoor fires and report anything that looks like one to 911 ASAP!
