A strong cold front will be crossing western New Jersey on Thursday. Rain from this system could start as early as late tonight or early Thursday morning. The bulk of the rain will be late morning into the afternoon. The worst of it should be over in the evening. Expect 1/2″ – 1″ of rain for the area. Some areas that receive downpours could receive more. As you can see from the graphic above, it will deposit a good amount of rain for the East coast.

Once this system passes we say goodbye to above normal temperatures for a while. Friday will be close to seasonable with highs in the low to mid 50’s. Saturday will be near 50. Then a below normal stretch starts on Sunday into next week with high temperatures only in the 40’s! It will feel cold but it is the second half of November after all.

Most of the leaves are off the trees now in western New Jersey. Today, Monday should be the pick of the week weather-wise. A great day to go outside and finish any last minute outdoor chores (like me). Look for mostly sunny and highs in the low to mid 60’s.

Thursday looks to be our rainy day this week and we could receive a good amount as shown on the map above. Right now it looks like afternoon into evening.

Cooler air arrives on Tuesday then increasing clouds on Wednesday for the system that will bring us rain on Thursday. Fair and cooler weather looks accurate for next weekends as of right now.

Western New Jersey has already seen wind gusts to the upper 30’s so far today with 38 being recorded n Stewartsville. Let’s hope the power system stays on!

My lights have already flickered twice. The map above from JCP&L shows there are scattered power outages in the area.

The winds should remain tonight and into Saturday. They will calm down a little Saturday evening but Sunday will be a breezy day as well

Western New Jersey has already seen some light rain this morning. Look for more periods of light rain to continue today. As seen in the above radar, some is about to move in from the SW. Look for amounts to be about 1/4″ in general.

This rain is associated with a fast moving cold front. This is tied to the same storm that brought snow to the Rockies. No we’re not going to get snow here – sort of. But it will get real windy on Friday as a result of the front pushing through and the intense storm passing by accompanied by high pressure moving in. Winds could easily gust to 40 mph. Please secure any holiday decorations. As always watch wet leaves on the roadways.

Up in the Poconos and far north west New Jersey on Saturday, there’s a chance of seeing some wet snow showers. Temperatures on Saturday will feel colder than they are due to the wind. Temperatures should stay most of the day in the 40’s and perhaps peeking at 50 for a daytime high. Winds should gradually diminish later on Saturday.

I’d like to start off today’s post with a huge thank you to all past and present veterans who served to protect our country! Make sure you get your free car wash if you are near a Shammy Shine car wash today. More info at their website.

Today’s weather should gradually improve in western New Jersey. We should see some breaks of sun but clouds will dominate for most of the day. Look for temperatures to be around 60 degrees for a daytime high. Thursday will feature a cold front that will move through the area with some showers. Look for less rain than we received on Tuesday (Stewartsville received almost 1/2″ of rain).

Windy and cooler weather will dominate Friday into Saturday reminding us it’s November.

Look for periods of rain on Tuesday. Right now we are in between two areas of rain. Steadier rain is to our east and moving away from us. An upper level disturbance is bringing slightly steadier rain to our west and that is heading in our direction. Look for that to arrive later this afternoon into the evening. Right now it looks like 1/4″ to 1/2″ of rain in general – some spots a little more.

Everything is on track for us to receive a good soaking today. It will not be raining all the time. The rain will come in waves, be heavy at times then nothing or only a drizzle.

There will also be gusty winds today in western New Jersey. The biggest threat will be the combination of rain + falling leaves = very slipper travel in sports. If you have ever walked on a bunch of wet leaves you know how slippery they can be. This is the first significant rain, with wind, and leaves we’ve had this fall so be on look out.

The storm could produce a band of heavy rain and wind in the middle of the night. There could also be some rumbles of thunder.

Warmer weather will continue today into tomorrow until a colder push of weather arrives later Thursday then cool into Saturday. Trick or treating continues to be fair but chilly on Saturday.

Well that didn’t take long. The lone cell that popped up about 30 minutes ago has intensified and starting to train. I can hear thunder in Stewartsville. I believe most will stay to my west and north but time will tell.

As you can see in the above map, Most of PA and a good part of western New Jersey have the potential for severe thunderstorms later today into the evening and tonight.

We are well below normal on rainfall as seen above. We need between 5-6″ of rain just to get us back to normal. Let’s just hope it all doesn’t come at once!

So how much rain can we get? Quite a bit if you believe the map above. These amounts are for the next 1-3 days total ending Wednesday morning. We are in the brightest red which is 3-4″ of rain.

This mornings three day precipitation total maps, shown above, for western New Jersey shows some much needed rain in the forecast. While no one wants to see rain on the weekend, this is much needed rain for our area. This rain will be the result of a slow moving cold front that will end the early summer warmth in May and bring us closer to reality for this time of year. Some showers and thundershowers could start as early as saturday afternoon. The most active part looks to be Saturday night into Sunday.
