Here we snow again in Stewartsville, Friday morning, February 5, 2021

Before we get to Sunday, we picked up a quick 1.1″ of snow this morning in Stewartsville. This is the result of a fast moving cold front that will be moving through the area today. The cold air will lag a bit behind the front as we could actually get back into the low 40’s today for high temperatures depending on how much sun makes it out today. The sunshine sure felt great yesterday!

The “Super Sunday” snow threat has been in and out of the forecast for several days now. It appears to be happening. My early thought on the fast moving storm are reflected in the graphic above my StormTeam4. At this time it appears that more snow will accumulate south and east with 1-3″ in most of our area.

This will NOT be like our last storm. This storm will be fast moving. Look for snow to arrive as early as pre-dawn on Sunday and perhaps be out of the area by kickoff time in the evening.

Looking longer term, there are other snow threats in the forecast. There’s even a good chance of artic air returning the second half of the week. You will start to hear about this in the news first impacting the central part of the US. Chicago will have many days of below zero temperatures!

After today’s cold and wind, there’s little doubt that the net round of interesting weather will be a storm early next week. This storm will feature accumulating snow and not be a fast mover.

There are still many factors that need to become better know before a more accurate forecast can be created. The earliest onset of the snow appears to be Sunday evening. Heavier snow will fall on Monday and perhaps into Monday overnight and Tuesday morning.

The European computer model is starting to show the storm moving further south. We need to keep an eye on this guidance to see if this becomes a trend. If it does it could mean less snow for our area. Other guidance suggests more snow for our area.

The above graphic is from the NWS and is only through Monday 7 pm. Based on what we know currently, I think this is a good range. It shows more to the south.

This can and probably will change several times between now and the event so check back for updates.

sleet in Stewartsville on January 26, 2021

Stewartsville recorded 0.2″ of sleet and a tiny bit of snow in the past 24 hours. The storm is moving away today and we should start to see periods of sunshine this afternoon.

Another storm system will pass to our south later today and on Thursday. This will result in the winds picking up and gusting to 30-40 mph at time. This will usher down very cold air from eastern Canada.

The cold winds will result in below-normal temperatures for the next several days. After today, we may not see temperatures above the freezing mark until early next week. Friday and Saturday high temperatures will be in the 20’s. Overnight lows will be in the upper single digits to low teens.

Looking long range, our next storm signal is later Sunday into early next week. Right now it has the potential to be a bigger storm than the last one. It might also be a snow to mix situation for our area as well (especially southern locations). It could be a long duration event as well lasting from late Sunday into Tuesday morning perhaps. We’ll keep an eye on it and update accordingly.

Less Snow and More Ice

Updates in the past 24 hours reveal that Tuesday’s system will result in less snow for our area and more mix of sleet and even freezing rain at times.

Timing: Look for light snow to arrive early Tuesday morning. Some areas may not even see anything yet by sunrise Tuesday. Light snow will gradually overspread the area but then start mixing with sleet and freezing rain by lunchtime. This will happen first in southern locations but eventually spread north.

I’m revising my snow forecast to coating to 2″. The 2″ will be in northern locations.

We can also expect a coating of sleet and freezing rain from this system. The map above show how much ice accumulation we can expect.

Looking longer range, snow weather fans will be disappointed. The storm for Thursday appears to stay mostly to our south. The next system for Sunday into Monday may be another snow to mix or rain situation. More details on that as we get closer. For now keep the snow blower covered up…

Details on the wintry weather for late Monday night and Tuesday are coming into focus. I’m expecting 1-3″ for western New Jersey. The lower end will be in southern areas and the upper end further to the north and west. Some sleet can mix in at times on Tuesday.

Timing: Look for light snow to arrive before sun-up on tuesday. the snow will be light and perhaps intermittent at times, especially in the afternoon.

Looking ahead to our next winter weather maker on Thursday, it may be another swing and a miss. This will truly be a storm that will intensify rapidly when it hits the Atlantic ocean. Unfortunately it appears to be south of us with the intensification happening when it gets east of our area. We may see some light snow showers depending on the exact track. Details as we get closer.

Today will be very similar to yesterday with clouds and sun and breezy conditions

A strong cold front will move through our area very early Wednesday morning that will result in some flurries or snow showers in sport. Look for a coating to perhaps a dusting in some areas. the map about shows the best chances for receiving 0.1″ of snow or more.

Happy New Year to all! Our weather the first full week of the new year should not be too exciting. Yesterday’s morning snow was exciting on the other hand! 1.6″ of snow in Stewartsville.

We should remain mostly cloudy with some breaks today. Tonight into Tuesday there is a weak disturbance that could bring us some flurries or snow showers to the area. Little accumulation is expected.

More sun that clouds return on Wednesday and remains for the balance of the week. We need to keep an eye on an ocean storm for Friday into Saturday that right now looks to stay to our south. Sometimes they have a habit of sneaking further north so we will monitor. temperatures overall this week will be slightly above normal. This temperature pattern looks to continue into mid month at lease.

We’ve had a nice stretch of dry pleasant weather. Two frontal systems look to combine over our area for Thursday into early Friday morning. This should result in periods of showers tomorrow into early Friday morning.

The humid, warm, damp weather will be replaced with cooler and dryer weather on Friday and Saturday. We will see temperatures in the upper 70’s both days with pleasant conditions.

Then another frontal system approaches for Sunday resulting in periods of rain and humid conditions. This only appears to last for the day then we return to pleasant weather into early next week.

The Storms Prediction Center (SPC) has increased the risk for severe weather this afternoon. The threat is greater the further south you go. Note the rare enhanced risk is not that far away.

Look for stormy weather to begin arriving as early as 4-5 pm.

These storms will allow much dryer and pleasant weather to arrive for tomorrow through our upcoming holiday weekend!

The early morning fog has lifted but the humidity remains. Look for warmer temperatures today with high temperatures near 90.

As is the case when we have warm temperatures and plenty of humidity, there is a chance of spotty afternoon showers and thundershowers. The severe risk should be minimal.

The Saturday morning satellite shows a mix of clouds and sun. Let’s root for the clouds if you dislike hot temperatures as they will help keep down the temperature a little bit

In looking at Sunday and beyond, we turn up the heat and humidity through Monday. Tuesday and Tuesday evening will be our next chance of widespread showers and thundershowers with our next cold front. That will hopefully cross out area on/before Wednesday and pave the way for more comfortable humidity and near seasonable high temperatures for the rest of the week. Fingers crossed!
