Several location in western New Jersey including Stewartsville heard the thunder and saw the lightning late this morning. That was unexpected so early in the day! This is an indication how much potential energy is in the atmosphere today!

The Storm Prediction Center agrees and has issues a Tornado Watch just to our south.

ww0028_radar

This is in effect until 11 pm tonight. I would not be surprised if this was extended a little further north but we’ll see. If not I expect a severe thunderstorm watch further north.

What this means is there is strong potential for heavy rain, strong gusty winds, lightning from late this afternoon until around midnight or so. The best chances for severe weather for western New Jersey appears to be from 5 pm – 9 pm.

I will post more information as it becomes available.

Strong winds and thunderstorms possible later today

Western New Jersey received a trace of snow and sleet in the past 24 hours and about 1/3″ of rain.

even though Wednesday has started off raw and drizzling, it won’t finish that way. Warmer air will push into western New Jersey later today raising temperatures considerably.

Wwith this warmer weather will come chances for heavier rain and strong gusty winds.

A cold front will be approaching western New Jersey on Monday. It will have some scattered showers and perhaps a thundershower anytime from late afternoon on. I expect the most active period to be from this evening until about midnight. This does not look to be a big rain maker. In fact I expect some locations will not see any rain at all.

7day

After a warm and somewhat more humid day today temperatures Tuesday thru Friday will be very comfortable unlike today’s stock market. Look for less humid weather to return with pleasant daytime highs near 80 (or below!) with overnight lows perfect for open windows and no A/C.

But don’t take out the fall clothes yet. Much warmer weather looks to return this weekend and last well into next week which is the start of school for many 🙁

So how much did it rain yesterday in western New Jersey? Let’s just say that small white piece of plastic in the picture above, was at the top right of my driveway yesterday before the rain (and I obviously didn’t pick it up and left it there 😉 The picture make my driveway appear more angled than it really is. While I realize plastic floats, there must have been a pretty good river of water going down the driveway.

So to answer the mystery Stewartsville received 1.53″ yesterday alone. Almost 1″ of that came yesterday late afternoon in a monsoon like shower moved through the area.

The cold front has pushed through the area and today and tomorrow will be less humid with high temperatures in the low 80’s. Overnight lows tonight and Sunday morning will be in the upper 50’s. Look for an increase in humidity on Sunday as the next cold front passes through the area on Monday. This should be a fast moving one with not too much moisture as it looks now.

Extreme western areas of New Jersey (as seen in the above map) picked up about 1″ of rain late yesterday afternoon as slow moving line of showers and some thundershowers moved south to north over the area. Stewartsville recorded 0.81″ in two separate rain incidents. This was the first significant rainfall for Stewartsville in a week. If you traveled a little more to the east, some places received nothing. My one daughter was in Clinton at the time and said the sun was shining.

But much further to the east and north, some sections of NE New Jersey received several inches of rain as seen in the purple shading.

A slow moving cold front will be approaching the area today but probably not clear the area entirely until sometime Friday. We could receive showers nearly anytime today but the best chances will be after 3 pm today. Hopefully the heaviest rain will fall later on or over night.
