PHI-Snow

Except for the complimentary Rita’s tomorrow and the fact that it’s Palm Sunday, it won’t feel very spring-like. Our Sunday will be 10 degrees cooler than normal with some wet snow. Most of what falls will not stick to roads. We could see a coating to perhaps 1″ on colder surfaces – and that’s only when it snow heavily (if it does at all) and if the snow continues into Sunday night. Bottom line this is much less of an event that was presented in the media several days ago.

7day

Monday will continue the colder weather but we get more spring-like on Tuesday and stay there for the rest of the week.

7day

Hopefully everyone in western New Jersey remembered to spring forward their clocks and to also change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

The main message I want to get across today is we have been so warm and above normal, many of us are thinking this is the norm. Sadly it’s not. So when we get a normal temperature day (upper 40’s for western New Jersey) it will feel like parka weather. Combine that with clouds, wind and rain will make people remember it’s March. We should get about 1/2″ of needed rain (it’s been dry lately). The rain will not totally clear out until later Tuesday.

Luckily the cold will not last too long and we will be back above normal in the upper 50’s Tuesday and the 60’s Wednesday and Thursday!

Remember the Ides of March!

SpringForward

Even though the weather the past couple of days in western New Jersey made us think we jumped into Summer already, we’re not there yet.

7day

Our “normal” high temperature this time of year should be in the upper 40’s. Our forecast for the next 7 days has us above that every day! Monday will be close and will not feel as warm with some rain Sunday night into Monday.

When you change your clocks, also change the batteries in your smoke and CO detectors too! (Some CO detectors have 5 or 10 year batteries in them so don’t change those but DO check the date on those. They should be recycled when the battery expires)

Crocus bloom in Stewartsville NJ in early March 2016

Crocus bloom in Stewartsville NJ in early March 2016

While I’m not advising anyone to put away their winter coats yet, warmer weather is on the way for western New Jersey this week. We may even have record breaking warmth on Wednesday!

One thing I did want to mention with all this warmth is people will want to head to their local nurseries and start planting things. It’s WAY TOO EARLY for that. For this area the farmer’s use MAY 10th as the last date of frost or freeze that’s safe for outdoor planting. That’s two whole months from now!

So what can you do? Clean up leaves, pick up brush, clean windows, stuff like that.

7day

Normal high temperature for this time of year is 46. Enjoy!

About 1/2

Light snow in Stewartsville March 4, 2016

About 1/2″ of new snow was reported in Stewartsville Friday morning. The snow has just about moved out of the area and we will see some sunshine later today. The winds will pick up as the storm intensifies as it heads out to sea.

Western New Jersey could see a similar light dusting late Saturday night and Sunday morning as another fast moving clipper system passes through the area. Then we turn on the warmers and will see temperatures at 60 or above Monday!

Temperatures will be well above normal in western New Jersey this weekend. Saturday will be the nicer of the two days with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures reaching into the mid to upper 50’s, especially in southern locations

Sunday will be a little cooler with highs only in the lower 50’s with an increase in clouds. The clouds will be from a small storm system that will pass to our south. But we will be on the northern fringe and receive some rain or wet snow overnight Sunday night into Monday morning.

Then out attention turns to what will happen in the Tuesday-Thursday time frame. More seasonable weather will return. Right now the storm systems look to be slowing down a bit so nothing looks to get started until Tuesday night. At this time is looks like western New Jersey will be impacted by two separate waves of low pressure. And it looks like these will track near or even to the west of our area that will give western New Jersey more rain than frozen. Updated details on that as we get closer.

Well that didn’t take long. The lone cell that popped up about 30 minutes ago has intensified and starting to train. I can hear thunder in Stewartsville. I believe most will stay to my west and north but time will tell.

As you can see in the above map, Most of PA and a good part of western New Jersey have the potential for severe thunderstorms later today into the evening and tonight.

We are well below normal on rainfall as seen above. We need between 5-6″ of rain just to get us back to normal. Let’s just hope it all doesn’t come at once!

So how much rain can we get? Quite a bit if you believe the map above. These amounts are for the next 1-3 days total ending Wednesday morning. We are in the brightest red which is 3-4″ of rain.

28. May 2015 · Comments Off on Severe Thunderstorm Watch Cancelled for NJ · Categories: spring, weather discussion, weather forecast · Tags: , ,

The severe thunderstorm watch previous in effect for today has been cancelled in NJ. Dryer more staple air has moved into the region and should not allow and *severe* thunderstorms to develop the rest of today.

There is a chance for some scattered shower especially to the east and south but most will not see any.

7day

Tonight should actually be not too bad as dryer air moves into the region. We should expect a low in the upper 50’s. The real question is to turn off the A/C or not. Friday will be in the low to mid 80’s but not too humid but probably warm enough for the A/C. Same for Saturday but there could be some late day showers or thundershowers. Sunday right now looks to feature a good chance of shower – let’s hope so since it’s been so dry lately.
