Western New Jersey enjoyed a very nice Sunday with light winds, sunshine and nice temperatures! As the Spring Equinox arrived at 6:30 this morning look for more of the same weather today and tomorrow.

Winter will make a brief comeback this Wednesday and Thursday with January like cold. Wednesday will only have high temperatures in the upper 30’s with breezy conditions. Wednesday night will shiver us with teens for lows with still below normal reading on Thursday. Our normal high this time of year is 50-51.

Warmer weather will arrive on Friday along with some showers.

At this point I think I can safely say we are out of the threat of any further accumulating snow. Sure we will still have some cold outbreaks now and then and still can’t rule out some frozen precipitation. To get any accumulating from this point forward you almost need perfect conditions and I don’t see that happening anymore this cold season.

NWS snow forecast for Saturday into Sunday morning

NWS snow forecast for Saturday into Sunday morning

After a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon clouds will increase later on as a warm front approaches western New Jersey. The warm front may give us some snow showers this evening.

Then a weak area of low pressure will form along the front early Saturday morning and move into our area. This will give us some light snow early Saturday morning. In southern sections of western New Jersey this should change to light rain showers as warmer air moves in Saturday mid day and early afternoon. Then colder air will filter back into western New Jersey and change any rain over to light snow. This light snow should continue off and on into Sunday morning.

How much are we talking about from both events? 1-3″ with lower amounts to the south and closer to 3″ (or perhaps a little more) in northern and elevated areas.

Yes technically Spring does arrive Monday morning but it certainly won’t feel or look like it. After colder weather on Sunday, there will be a brief warm up on Monday and Tuesday. But that will be followed by another very cold outbreak for Wednesday.

This snow today has certainly over-performed. As of 11 am 4.3″ of snow in Stewartsville. The heavy snow band that came through about an hour ago really over-produced. I picked up over 1″ of snow per hour for 2 hours in a row! That’s impressive for this type of system in March.

The radar above shows the darker band of heavy snow moving away from western New Jersey. I anticipate the snow ending by early afternoon. Then we need to be on the lookout for snow squalls this afternoon and early evening as much colder air moves into the region.

The windy weather of yesterday and today tell us a change is a coming. Today’s relatively balmy conditions will not be experienced again for a while. The NWS has issued a winter weather advisory for all of western New Jersey as seen in the purple in the map above.

Look for clouds to increase later today and tonight. It will be warm enough to have the precipitation start off as rain late tonight and early tomorrow morning. As colder air continues to move into our area the rain should change to a mix and then all snow.

My forecast is for 1-3″ of snow in southern sections of western New Jersey with perhaps a little more up to the north and in any elevated areas. There will be more accumulation on colder, grassy surfaces than on roads. I do expect the roads to get covered a little since it will be snowing before sun up and could come down moderate at times. My snow forecast is a little lower than what is seen on the NWS map above.

The snow should taper off to snow showers in the afternoon and then the chill sets in. We will not get above freezing all weekend! Keep in mind our normal daytime high is now approaching 47 degrees. We will most likely not see high temperatures in the 40’s for at least a week!

The Storms Prediction Center has placed all of western New Jersey in a slight risk of severe thunderstorms for today. The greatest risk appears to be from  3 – 6 pm from west to east.

These storms are the result of the unseasonably warm weather we have been experiencing over the past couple of days. Stewartsville reached 77 yesterday!

but all good things must come to an end. Sunday will be closer to normal with temperatures back to the 40’s with breezy conditions. Temperatures should rebound into the 50’s early next week.

Snow falls on Spring flowers in April 2016

After a warm start, spring in western New Jersey has turned cold and in some cases snowy!

Rain is overspreading western New Jersey this Thursday morning. Look for rain to increase in coverage and intensity this afternoon. Good news is it will be warmer today with high temperatures in the upper 50’s. We also do need the rain!

The rain should not last too long and looks to taper off to showers tonight. We should receive 1/2″ – 1″ of rain in the area.

Friday will features some showers and be not too bad. Then another system crosses into the area later Friday night into Saturday and ushers in even colder air for this time of year. Look for a period of wet snow on Saturday that could whiten the ground in some locations – especially elevated areas!
