Well it finally looks and feels like December! Here are some reasons this will NOT be a big snow producer for western New Jersey:

1. A warm front is approaching the area. This means once the front passes, we will get warm and the frozen precipitation will turn to rain eventually
2. The main storm system is going to go to our north and west, meaning we will be on the “warm” side of the storm
3. There is no cold high pressure to our north pumping in colder air

NWS expected snow fall

NWS expected snow fall

With the above in mind this is what will happen in western New Jersey. Periods of light snow will overspread the area this afternoon. This could start as early as mid day in some part of the area but most of that should stay to our west. We could see a coating on the ground from this.

Then there will be a break in the precipitation until the storm get closer to our area. The precipitation should resume mid to late evening and continue overnight.

I expect light snow to mix with sleet and freezing rain before eventually changing to plain rain by Monday morning. This transition will happen faster in southern and lower elevation areas. Areas further north and more elevated areas will see the transition take longer.

In southern warren county, central and southern hunterdon counties I expect a coating to 1″ of snow before changing over to mix then rain. North of that area up to and perhaps just a little bit further north of I-80 I can see 1-3″ of light snow. North of that has the potential for 3-6″ before the changeover.

There could be some light ice buildup during the changeover period so be aware of that.

The Monday morning commute will need some extra travel time so please allow for it.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather advisory starting at 1 pm today lasting into tomorrow.

even though Wednesday has started off raw and drizzling, it won’t finish that way. Warmer air will push into western New Jersey later today raising temperatures considerably.

Wwith this warmer weather will come chances for heavier rain and strong gusty winds.

Snow outside encased in icy crust this morning in western New Jersey

Snow outside encased in icy crust this morning in western New Jersey

Anyone who does not have the pleasure of garaging their car will know real fast this morning that we had some freezing rain last evening. Allow extra time to scrape off the car and let it warm up.

Stewartsville received 1.4″ of snow before changing to sleet and freezing rain yesterday.

Sharp temperature rise in western New Jersey around 5 am Tuesday morning

Sharp temperature rise in western New Jersey around 5 am Tuesday morning

The temperature stayed quite cold in western New Jersey until around 5 am. Believe it or not we should top out in the mid 50’s today. Considering we were at 0 a few days ago that’s nearly a 60 degree temperature swing!

Moderate to heavy rain will be moving into western New Jersey later this morning and into the afternoon.

Moderate to heavy rain will be moving into western New Jersey later this morning and into the afternoon.

We expect to see an additional 1-2″ of rain today as all that rain on the radar above needs to pass through western New Jersey. It will remain all rain as the temperatures will be quite mild in the 50’s. Be on the lookout for localized flooding. HOpefully all the rain will melt the remaining ice on sidewalks and colder surfaces.

Periods of rain will continue Wednesday for western New Jersey. So far we’ve received about 1/2″ of rain and we should receive another 1/3 – 1/2″ of rain today and tonight. Fog will continue to be dense at times.

As the system pulls away Thursday, the winds will be strong. Make sure any holiday decorations are secured! Fair and close to seasonable weather arrives Friday through Monday.

From the above map we can see that most locations in western New Jersey received around 1″ of rain. Stewartsville received 1.18″ There were some slightly more reports further to the east.

Today will be a seasonable day for the end of November. On Saturday night a secondary cold front will pass through the area bringing coldest air of the new season for Sunday into early next week. Look for highs on Sunday thru Tuesday not getting out of the 40’s. There is a chance that some areas may see a sprinkle or some wet snow flakes late Saturday into Sunday morning but it shouldn’t be much.

Long range outlook for Thanksgiving has warmer more seasonable weather for Thanksgiving with high temperatures in the low 50’s.

Everything is on track for us to receive a good soaking today. It will not be raining all the time. The rain will come in waves, be heavy at times then nothing or only a drizzle.

There will also be gusty winds today in western New Jersey. The biggest threat will be the combination of rain + falling leaves = very slipper travel in sports. If you have ever walked on a bunch of wet leaves you know how slippery they can be. This is the first significant rain, with wind, and leaves we’ve had this fall so be on look out.

The storm could produce a band of heavy rain and wind in the middle of the night. There could also be some rumbles of thunder.

Warmer weather will continue today into tomorrow until a colder push of weather arrives later Thursday then cool into Saturday. Trick or treating continues to be fair but chilly on Saturday.
