Periods of rain will continue Wednesday for western New Jersey. So far we’ve received about 1/2″ of rain and we should receive another 1/3 – 1/2″ of rain today and tonight. Fog will continue to be dense at times.

As the system pulls away Thursday, the winds will be strong. Make sure any holiday decorations are secured! Fair and close to seasonable weather arrives Friday through Monday.

From the above map we can see that most locations in western New Jersey received around 1″ of rain. Stewartsville received 1.18″ There were some slightly more reports further to the east.

Today will be a seasonable day for the end of November. On Saturday night a secondary cold front will pass through the area bringing coldest air of the new season for Sunday into early next week. Look for highs on Sunday thru Tuesday not getting out of the 40’s. There is a chance that some areas may see a sprinkle or some wet snow flakes late Saturday into Sunday morning but it shouldn’t be much.

Long range outlook for Thanksgiving has warmer more seasonable weather for Thanksgiving with high temperatures in the low 50’s.

Everything is on track for us to receive a good soaking today. It will not be raining all the time. The rain will come in waves, be heavy at times then nothing or only a drizzle.

There will also be gusty winds today in western New Jersey. The biggest threat will be the combination of rain + falling leaves = very slipper travel in sports. If you have ever walked on a bunch of wet leaves you know how slippery they can be. This is the first significant rain, with wind, and leaves we’ve had this fall so be on look out.

The storm could produce a band of heavy rain and wind in the middle of the night. There could also be some rumbles of thunder.

Warmer weather will continue today into tomorrow until a colder push of weather arrives later Thursday then cool into Saturday. Trick or treating continues to be fair but chilly on Saturday.

So how much did it rain yesterday in western New Jersey? Let’s just say that small white piece of plastic in the picture above, was at the top right of my driveway yesterday before the rain (and I obviously didn’t pick it up and left it there πŸ˜‰ The picture make my driveway appear more angled than it really is. While I realize plastic floats, there must have been a pretty good river of water going down the driveway.

So to answer the mystery Stewartsville received 1.53″ yesterday alone. Almost 1″ of that came yesterday late afternoon in a monsoon like shower moved through the area.

The cold front has pushed through the area and today and tomorrow will be less humid with high temperatures in the low 80’s. Overnight lows tonight and Sunday morning will be in the upper 50’s. Look for an increase in humidity on Sunday as the next cold front passes through the area on Monday. This should be a fast moving one with not too much moisture as it looks now.

5.3” of new snow in Stewartsville as of 11:30 am. We have one more heavy band of snow to push through the area then hopefully the snow should start to lighten up this afternoon. Since my initial forecast of 3-6” has busted, I’ll now go for 6-10” and hope I don’t bust again! There is a very good chance sections to the south and east will get a foot of snow. Further to the north they are not getting as much snow.

Another thing I want to point out is the temperature is much colder than it was this morning so please keep that in mind when removing the snow this afternoon – as well as breezy conditions. We are now in the upper teens in western New Jersey!

temperature now up to 28 degrees and *slowly* climbing in western New Jersey. Hopefully by 1 am will be above freezing and can have plain rain. 0.9” total of snow and sleet.

Here is a great graphic from NWS Boston showing the different types of winter precipitation and how each type forms.

WinterPrecip-NWS-Boston

The only thing I’d like to point out here is it RARELY hails in the winter time. I hear a lot of folks saying “it’s hailing outside” when it’s really sleeting. Hail is found only in thunderstorm type of clouds with strong updrafts. Yes this can happen in the cold season but it’s rare.
