25. January 2015 · Comments Off on Potential For Major Winter Storm Monday Into Tuesday · Categories: weather discussion

As I stated previously, I’m away on business and limited access to post which is unfortunate as the potential is there for a significant snow storm for western new jersey. The greatest risk is to our east but we still have the potential for 6-10″ of snow.

The snow will be in two parts. The first part will start later Sunday evening and last into Monday morning. This will be somewhat light and only result in a couple/few inches of snow.

Then the storm will hit the Atlantic Ocean and start strengthening rapidly. Indications are it may not move very fast at some point. This is when the brunt of the storm will impact us. This will be Monday afternoon into Tuesday. Winds could be quite gusty as well.

I will try and post more this evening but I will be on the road all day today…

22. January 2015 · Comments Off on Wednesday Clipper Fizzle; Saturday Thoughts · Categories: weather discussion

I’m traveling on business so not as much time to update.

The clipper underperformed yesterday. Western new jersey generally received 1/4 to 1/2″ of snow fall with locally more. More snow fell (1-2″) in southern NJ closer to the shore where the clipper strengthened.

All thoughts are turning to the weekend at this point. A coastal storm will move up the coast and impact us late Friday night into Saturday. How far up will it travel? How warm will it get here? How much precipitation? All good questions at this point. Several days ago the models were split if the storm would make it up this far north. That appears to be a near lock. Maybe too much so as now warmer air from the Atlantic appears to push the rain/snow line inland somewhat. How far and for how long? More good questions.

My preliminary thoughts at this time for western new jersey are this: snow developing late Friday night into Saturday. Snow may mix with or changeover briefly to rain at some point on Saturday before changing back to snow before ending. At this point I’m thinking 3-6″potential.

More updates as they develop and my time permits.

The NWS has slightly shifted their anticipated “heavier” snow for Wednesday afternoon and night to our south. I agree with this and their amounts. Look for light snow to move into the area Wednesday afternoon. Timing for western new jersey weather at this point is mid afternoon on. Most of the accumulating snow will be after sunset on Wednesday and Wednesday evening.

Back to today, Tuesday. We will see partly to mostly cloudy at times. There is a disturbance in the upper atmosphere that will be moving through. It’s not out of the question to see a flurry or two at times today but nothing significant.

Thursday morning’s commute will be a tricky one as will the Wednesday evening commute. After that attention turns to our south as two storms will be forming off the SE coast. How close they get to us is the big question. Computer models have been trending SLIGHTLY closer to us so this is something we have to keep an eye on for western NJ weather. Right now best chances of seeing any snow over the weekend or on Monday are to our south and east.

Western New Jersey saw brisk conditions today. There was some left over black ice from yesterdays freezing rain/rain/re-freeze. Winds picked up and there were even a few snow flurries mid day.

Tuesday will feature partly sunny skies in western new jersey with a high temperature in the mid to upper 30’s.

The next chance of precipitation will be Wednesday into Thursday. Right now there are still some uncertainties but this is what it looks like at the present time. Periods of light snow from a fast moving Clipper system appear to develop Wednesday afternoon. This will continue into Wednesday evening and overnight. Right now it looks to be a minor system with the potential to drop 1-3”

After that will be a cold Winter day on Thursday and Friday. The weekend right now looks seasonable with another winter storm most likely passing to our south.

We’ll keep you updated on all storms as always!

Most sections of western New Hersey have changed over from freezing rain to rain as of 1pm. There might be some pockets of colder surfaces where rain is still freezing on contact or might be slippery.

the mid day weather map above shows the coastal storm developing nicely. A warm front is stretched from near Philadelphia to New York City up to eastern CT and Massachusetts. East of the front temperatures are nearing 50 degrees! West of the warm front temperatures are struggling in the 30’s. The rain from the coastal storm will continue to move north east and should start to taper off by later in the afternoon. Rain will be heavy at times. There is a flood advisory to our south and east.

A cold front to our west above will push through the area later today. This will bring an end to the rain and usher in some colder weather to start the work week.

Cold start this Saturday with early morning lows in the upper single digits in western new jersey. Today will be a partly sunny day (clouds increasing in the afternoon) with highs in the mid to upper 20’s. Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. Clouds are already starting to increase to our west and south west from tomorrows rain maker. Look for temperatures to drop early this evening into the teens then slowly rise overnight to the mid to upper 20’s by day break.

As you can see above in the maps Sunday will be wet. More rain will fall to our east. Western new jersey will be on the western fringe of the rainfall. Expect rain to start on Sunday by mid morning and end by mid afternoon. It may start off as a little sleet or snow in the beginning but then go over to rain. I’m expecting 1/4” to 1/2” in this area. Over 1” of rain will fall in eastern new jersey near the shore.

Our next chance of precipitation will be a clipper on late Tuesday into Wednesday. Right now it looks to stay to our north which will put us on the warm side. We could see some light snow over to light rain. More details as we get closer. Enjoy a cold Saturday!

An artic cold front has passed through western new jersey. this will bring back cold and windy conditions to western new jersey.

Look  for cold temperatures on Friday night and Saturday morning. Overnight lows will be in the single digits. Combined with the wind will not make it pleasant outside.

The front is bringing in some snow showers that will move through the area this afternoon.

Saturday will be cold with high in the mid 20’s.

Sunday out weather will change fast with a storm system moving up the coast. At this time it looks to stay far enough to the east that will give us only light rain. Further to the east, they will have a wind swept rain with over 1” of rain. The rain will end perhaps as some snow showers Sunday night as colder air returns.

Typical winter weather continues for western New Jersey. Today we have clouds from a system to our south and east. Further to the north, partly to mostly sunny skies are seen. It would be nice if that could make it here!

the sun should return on Friday. A reinforcing shot of cold air will arrive on Friday so Friday night and Saturday will be cold once again. Then our January “thaw” arrives on Sunday. Right now it looks like temperatures will make it into the low 40’s. Unfortunately warmer air brings moisture with it and mostly rain is expected. There could be some frozen precipitation if it arrives soon enough or if colder air comes in fast at the end. Then we return to slightly below normal cold next week with no major snow storms in the near term. The potential is there for the weekend of the 24th. We’ll see…

12. January 2015 · Comments Off on Icy Monday Morning · Categories: weather discussion · Tags: , , ,

Monday morning started off icy as mentioned yesterday.

Icy start to Monday morning

What I found very interesting with this mornings ice is there was none on the trees – only the ground and roads. that tells me the air temperature was slightly above freezing but the ground was very cold from the preceding weather.

So far we picked up .41” of rain as of 5pm. Another light band of rain is moving through presently. There is some additional light rain and snow in central and western PA associated with the cold front that will move through later tonight. So we may see a little bit of frozen precipitation before it is all said and done.

Colder weather returns for Tuesday and Wednesday. Then a gradual moderation later in the week into the weekend.
