Yesterday’s storm certainly over-performed as far as I’m concerned. While I knew more snow would fall that would accumulate, I didn’t expect the longevity of the intensity that resulted in more snow accumulating than I forecasted. Stewartsville received 4″ of wet snow. Here are some additional accumulations in the western New Jersey area:

Saturday will be the better of the two this weekend weather wise. Look for partly sunny skies with temperatures near 50. There will be a breeze which combined with the temperature and sun should help to melt most if not all that fell yesterday. There could be a brief rain shower this evening as colder air arrives in the region. Sunday will be sunny but cold for this time of year. Colder than normal will continue into the new week until a nice warm-up arrives on Wednesday, albeit with a chance of rain.

7DayWestern New Jersey received about 1/3″ of rain so far as of Saturday morning. It should continue to rain steady until early afternoon. Then we should just have showers the rest of the day and start to dry out later this evening.

Happy Pi Day!

Western New Jersey should see a sunny morning with increasing clouds this afternoon. High temperatures should be in the mid 40’s. Clouds will lower and thicken tonight and look for rain to start around midnight. It might start a little sooner in eastern PA. As the map above reflect, the area should pick up 1/2” of rain, perhaps a little more. Most of the steadier rain will be overnight into Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon should be more showers.

Sunday looks to be the better of the two days but breezy conditions will make it feel on the cool side. Monday and Tuesday look to be nice days before a cold front comes through Tuesday night.

Western New Jersey enjoyed a beautiful afternoon on Wednesday afternoon as high temperatures went into the mid to upper 50’s. A cooler air mass has settled into the region for the remainder of the week. We should be having high temperatures in the mid to upper 40’s this time of year. Today we should be in the mid 40’s with plenty of sunshine but a stiff breeze will make it feel cooler than it actually is.

Friday will be similar to today but with increasing clouds in the afternoon. Rain should hold off to late evening then continue overnight into Saturday morning. This storm system has more moisture to work with than the last one. Western New Jersey area looks to received about 1/2” – 1” of rain. While this shouldn’t be enough to cause widespread flooding, the ground is still somewhat frozen and can’t absorb what it could if it wasn’t snow covered.

No it doesn’t yet feel very Spring like outside but we’ll make some progress this week! Don’t forget to change your clock tonight before retiring AND change your smoke alarm batteries!!

image

Today western New Jersey should see partly sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid to upper 30’s! Don’t be surprised if we see some flurries overnight – nothing to worry about. Sunday looks even better with highs in the low to mid 40’s. Other than a chance of some rain later Tuesday into Tuesday night we should have what we will call a mild week even though it’s really only “normal” high temperatures for us this time of year. Will we hit 50 on Wednesday? Let’s hope so!

Spring forward!

Saturday morning is starting off cloudy in western new jersey. Don’t be surprised if you see a few snow flurries this morning. A disturbance is passing to our north and producing some light snow. Most of this is not reaching the ground since it’s so dry outside.

Saturday will remain cloudy with highs in the mid 30’s. The weekend should remain precipitation free until later Sunday night. We then expect rain or a wintry mix to start lightly and continue into Monday. As colder air arrives on Monday, the wintry mix may change to snow and give us a light accumulation before ending. Right now that looks to be a coating to 1-2”

Looking down the road the rest of the week should be dry and only slightly below normal temperatures. The another artic front will push thru the area giving us once again very cold temperatures Friday into next weekend.

Happy National Weatherperson Day! For more information on the history of national weather person’s day follow this link.

Another artic cold front moved through western new jersey this morning by sunup and dropped about 1/2” of snow in the area. Temperatures did not rise too much after than and dropped for most of the day. By the evening commute temperatures are near 20 degrees! Tonight will be possibly the coldest night of the winter so far with low temperatures approaching zero.

Friday will be another cold day similar to this past Tuesday. Friday night won’t be quite as cold as tonight and the winds should diminish making it feel nicer. Saturday will have more clouds than sun but temperatures’ should rise to the mid to upper 30’s in our area.

Here’s the synopsis of what will happen Sunday into Tuesday. The artic front that passed through the area this morning will stall south of our area. Warmer air in advance of another storm system in the upper plains will bring in some precipitation on Sunday. This could arrive as early as Saturday night – timing to be determined. Sunday will feature a mix of snow, sleet and perhaps even rain. Since warm air will still be pumped in the upper layers of the atmosphere above us, we may even see rain in southern sections for a time. Then as the storm reaches the coast and intensifies, it will bring colder air into the area Sunday evening into Monday. It’s this time period that hold the greatest potential for our area to receive snow from this system.

One thing I want to point out is the heavier amounts of precipitation (snow) will fall to our north – primarily north of interstate 80. Computer model trends have been keeping it up there and in some cases moving it north – so this will be something to keep an eye on. If the precipitation moved too far north we will be warmer and receive less snow.

The situation should become clearer tomorrow.

Another very cold morning in western New Jersey this Saturday morning. Most stations were in the single digits with a stiff north west wind making it feel well below zero with wind chill.

I wanted to post this great graphic from the NWS that shows the different types of winter precipitation. Why? Because my forecast has some of them in it!

Recent computer modeling of the Sunday night-Monday morning storm continues to bring the storm closer to our area. This will result in the rain/mix/snow line coming very close to our area. In fact, at this time, I believe southern areas of western new Jersey will in fact switch over to a mix if not completely rain.

The NWS has placed western New Jersey in a Winter Storm Watch for Sunday evening into Monday. There current forecast for snow amounts is below:

StormTotalSnowRange (4)

At this time I’m not forecasting amounts that high in southern areas of western new jersey. In these areas I’m forecasting 3-6” of snow for now with more to the north and west, especially elevated sections. In these areas I’ll forecast 6-10” at this time.

I’ll post more details Sunday morning or as time permits.

Cold start this Saturday with early morning lows in the upper single digits in western new jersey. Today will be a partly sunny day (clouds increasing in the afternoon) with highs in the mid to upper 20’s. Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. Clouds are already starting to increase to our west and south west from tomorrows rain maker. Look for temperatures to drop early this evening into the teens then slowly rise overnight to the mid to upper 20’s by day break.

As you can see above in the maps Sunday will be wet. More rain will fall to our east. Western new jersey will be on the western fringe of the rainfall. Expect rain to start on Sunday by mid morning and end by mid afternoon. It may start off as a little sleet or snow in the beginning but then go over to rain. I’m expecting 1/4” to 1/2” in this area. Over 1” of rain will fall in eastern new jersey near the shore.

Our next chance of precipitation will be a clipper on late Tuesday into Wednesday. Right now it looks to stay to our north which will put us on the warm side. We could see some light snow over to light rain. More details as we get closer. Enjoy a cold Saturday!
