A strong cold front will be crossing western New Jersey on Thursday. Rain from this system could start as early as late tonight or early Thursday morning. The bulk of the rain will be late morning into the afternoon. The worst of it should be over in the evening. Expect 1/2″ – 1″ of rain for the area. Some areas that receive downpours could receive more. As you can see from the graphic above, it will deposit a good amount of rain for the East coast.

Once this system passes we say goodbye to above normal temperatures for a while. Friday will be close to seasonable with highs in the low to mid 50’s. Saturday will be near 50. Then a below normal stretch starts on Sunday into next week with high temperatures only in the 40’s! It will feel cold but it is the second half of November after all.

imageNWS Snow Forecast for Thursday A quick update this morning as I have a busy day planned. Yesterday afternoon and evening western New Jersey received 0.5″ snow followed by 0.4″ of sleet. We slowly transitioned to freezing rain then rain. We also have some fog.

We will continue to have light rain on and off most of the day into this evening. Mid to late evening tonight the rain will start mixing with sleet then snow then changeover completely by midnight. I still believe most of the heavier snow will fall to our south. At this time I’m forecasting 3-6″ of snow overnight and Thursday. There will be more in southern sections and less in the far north.

Skies are now mostly cloudy in western New Jersey this Tuesday morning. We will see the clouds thicken up and lower as the day moves on. High temperatures will be in the upper 20’s to around 30. Look for snow to move into our area between 3-5 pm. Most locations will receive a coating to 2” of snow this evening before it changes over to sleet then freezing rain. Speaking of changeover, I believe this will happen quickly this evening. We could start seeing sleet mixing in as early as 7pm. Then it will become a complete wintry mix including freezing rain. Then we start the waiting game: how fast will the surface temperature rise so we can switch from freezing rain to plain rain. This could happen as early as 10 pm or as late as after midnight.

We will have periods of rain late night into the day on Wednesday. Wednesday will be warmer with a high in the low 40’s.

Then round two starts. Colder air will start working into our area Wednesday evening and night. This will eventually mix the rain with sleet. Then we will transition to snow and it looks to continue into Thursday. This will be a battle between how fast the cold air arrives while the precipitation stays around. Right now computer models are suggesting we have the potential for an additional 3-6” late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. I’ll focus more on this once we get tonight’s weather out of the way.

Then colder Thursday night (single digits) then we have what looks like a nice stretch of dry weather Friday into Monday!

Radar is showing it snowing over western New Jersey this Thursday morning. However it’s not reaching the ground. Why? Because its so cold and dry outside. All of the snow south and east of Philly is reaching the ground and accumulating several inches. We should only see flurries today with most of it out of the area by early afternoon.

This storm passing offshore will bring in a fresh supply of cold air. We should have a low near 10 Friday morning and remain in the 20’s during the day Friday and Saturday. It will also be cold Saturday and Sunday mornings with a low in the single digits.

Out next chance of precipitation looks to be Sunday night into Monday. More info on that as we get closer.

Today will be slightly below seasonable  temperature wise with a high only in the low 40’s. The partly sunny skies should help compared to the last few days.

Friday will feature increasing clouds with rain coming in the evening. I don’t think we will have too much to worry about as far as snow or sleet in the beginning in southern sections. However further to the north and west (especially elevated sections) may have some sleet/snow in the beginning.

The rain looks to continue and become heavy at times on Saturday unfortunately as the Phillipsburg Stateliners football team will be heading to Rutgers Stadium for the State championship game. History has shown this game never gets pleasant weather. The picture above was taken at last years championship game. Snow started falling during the game. During half time they had to plow the field!

Sunday looks to be somewhat dryer but I’m starting to get concerned about a potential “sneaky” coastal storm for Monday-Tuesday that may have some cold weather surprises. Not all of the computer models are showing this yet but the consistent European one has been showing this for a while. I’ll post more as it becomes available.
