Stewartsville, NJ Saturday March 2, 2019

4.3″ of new snow fell overnight in Stewartsville and surrounding areas overnight. The snow started around midnight give or take and tapered off to flurries around 9 am.

My Spring-time flag didn’t ward off the snow

Our Winter WEather Advisory expired at 9 am this morning. But it will be soon replaced with a Winter Storm Watch that will go in effect at 1 pm Sunday afternoon.

NWS snow forecast for Sunday into Monday morning

The next storm looks to begin in our area Sunday afternoon. This storm will be the biggest and last of the series. For our area this appears to be an all snow at this time. The same areas that received the most snow today look to repeat tomorrow. The good news is the worse of the storm will be Sunday night and early Monday morning before sun-up. I anticipate schools will be closed and traveled delayed for a while Monday morning.

Based an what I’m seeing now I’m going to forecast 4-8″ of snow for the Sunday-Monday storm. The real question is will this be the biggest snow of the season for us? We received over 7″ back in November.

1 year ago today

As we are too aware, March is turning into a new extended winter season for us. The above photo was taken on this date last year. There have been several March’s in the past few years that have been cold and snowy. We certainly will have the cold part next week but I’m anticipating a return to normal and maybe even a warm up starting in around 10 days.

Rain forecast for Sunday into Monday

Rain forecast for Sunday into Monday

Rain is still forecast for Sunday into Monday but amounts for western jersey are reduced per the above graphic. But 2″ would still be a much beneficial rainfall. I just hope the trend doesn’t continue and the heavier rain gets pushed to the east…

Overnight rainfall

Overnight rainfall

We are waking up to a soggy Sunday morning this Labor Day weekend. In Stewartsville 1.03″ of new rain was recorded in the past 24 hours ending at 8 am. This rain is due in part from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey.

The rain should taper off to showers by mid day but I can see more showers and perhaps even a brief thundershower later this afternoon as an upper level low passes through the area. Monday’s weather looks much nicer and warmer!

The last of the kids returning to school on Tuesday will be greeted by warm weather and another chance of soggy weather on Wednesday and Thursday.

NHC forecast for Hurricane Irma

NHC forecast for Hurricane Irma

We are still keeping an eye on Irma. You are probably hearing some social media reports of landfall here and landfall there. NO ONE and NO COMPUTER model at this point knows exactly where the hurricane is going to go. All of these are just tools and some of them are better than others. At this point this far out I take them as a grain of salt. It’s important to watch them for trends and to see when they trend to the same solution. If the hurricane makes it to our area it will not be until next Sunday or more likely the following week.

Rainfall forecast for Sunday into Monday

Rainfall forecast for Sunday into Monday

And boy do we need it. Not only western New Jersey but the entire region is in a drought and very dry. The bulk of this looks to fall Sunday overnight into Monday morning. So if this verifies, the Monday morning commute may not be too fun (not that it ever is).

I just hope we get at least half this rain.

Rainy Sunday morning across western New Jersey this Sunday morning. Good news is it’s warm outside and the steady rain is already over. But there will be showers on and off for the next several hours. Most areas have received about 1″ of rain – some areas more. Stewartsville so far received 0.89″ of rain.

7day

Colder air arrives for the work week as has been advertised before. Daytime highs will be in the 30’s. A fast moving clipper system will visit western New Jersey Tuesday afternoon and evening that will not only usher in another arctic cold front but some light snow. Look for a possible dusting in some areas. More on that as we get closer.

As we look long range there could be a slight warm up by end of next week but a storm is possible around next weekend and even another one after that. Remember: it’s is mid January!

A cold front is pushing through western New Jersey Sunday and will result in improving conditions this afternoon. There will be increasing amounts of sunshine and conditions will start to dry out. We only received about 1/10th of an inch of rain. More on the way Wednesday.

Fall colors are peaking in western New Jersey so get outside and enjoy them before you have to rake ’em!

7day

Monday and tuesday will be much more seasonable with high temperatures a few degrees below normal. Our next rain will be on Wednesday in to Thursday morning. This could be a good soaking of much needed rain as the remnants of Hurricane Patricia pass to our west. More details as we get closer.

7day

Western New Jersey received about 1/2″ of rain since this time Saturday morning. Combined with the Friday night rainfall give us between 3/4″ and 1″ of ran. Thank goodness it didn’t all come at once!

Today we will see temperature in the mid to upper 40’s which is seasonable for this time of year. Unfortunately it will be accompanied by winds that will make it feel much cooler today.

Monday will be a nice day with high temperatures in the mid 50’s. But then a cold front will approach the area on Tuesday and bring below normal temperatures on Wednesday.

Temperatures in the mid 40’s will make for a nice Sunday afternoon in western New Jersey. It would be nicer if the skies was 100% sunny and it wasn’t so breezy but compared to what it’s been, let’s not complain. Monday should be a near normal day as well with highs in the mid 40’s. Tuesday will feature a storm to our south that I was hoping was going to stay to our south. It looks to move far enough north to possibly impact our area on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday may be the pick of the week as we make an attempt at 50 degrees!

Enjoy the break in the weather while it lasts and get outside and do any chores that need to be done or take a nice snow hike!

After Saturday morning lows in the single digits, western New Jersey weather will be sunny with relatively light winds and a high temperature in the mid to upper 20’s today. Today might be a good day to run any errands or do outdoor chores. This evening will start off clear and temperatures will drop fast initially under clear skies and light winds. Then clouds will increase the second half of the night. We should have an overnight low in the single digits again.

Sunday will be mostly cloudy with periods of light snow starting as early as mid day. I do think the snow will be spotty and intermittent until later in the day. There could be periods when it’s coming down pretty good followed by little or no snow – similar to the last event like this. Then the snow will become more steady and regular late in the afternoon into the evening. Then we start the race of warm air moving in above us that will change us to a wintry mix. I do think we will remain below freezing for most of the time precipitation is falling. This time, unlike the last storm, I think we will mix with sleet and freezing rain at the end of the storm. This will lead to less snow in southern sections of western New Jersey.

Right now I’m forecasting a general 1-3” of snow on Sunday and Sunday night. There will be a little more in northern sections where the mix or changeover does not occur. I do anticipate all precipitation ending BEFORE sunup on Monday morning. So hopefully any school impacts will be delays only at best.

Monday will turn out to be a nice day with temperatures in the mid to upper 30’s. Our next storm will be later on Tuesday into Wednesday. Right now this looks to be a warmer snow. We may briefly start off with snow that will go to a wintry mix rather quickly and then to rain.

Update on the storm. It has been snowing lightly in western New Jersey since about 5:30 pm this evening. As of 10:45 pm there is approximately 1” of new snow on the ground.

Based on observations and radar, my forecast is adjusted downward for 1-3” of snow before we start to mix with sleet and freezing rain (by 3am) and then change over to rain by 6-8am. The above map, a revised snowfall forecast by NWS, is supported by me. More snow will fall to the north and west and less to the south and east. As you go north, you will see 3-8” of snow before mixing.
