Rain is still forecast for Sunday into Monday but amounts for western jersey are reduced per the above graphic. But 2″ would still be a much beneficial rainfall. I just hope the trend doesn’t continue and the heavier rain gets pushed to the east…
The rainfall yesterday was on the lighter side of what was forecast. But some rain is better than no rain. Stewartsville received 0.66″ of rain.
Today will feature high temperatures in the 60’s which is above the seasonable normal of 61. Tomorrow will be slightly below normal with a high of 59. Then we moderate late week into the weekend. Saturday looks very nice but rain is forecast to move into the area on Sunday and it could be a good soaking as shown in the map above.
We are waking up to a soggy Sunday morning this Labor Day weekend. In Stewartsville 1.03″ of new rain was recorded in the past 24 hours ending at 8 am. This rain is due in part from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey.
We are still keeping an eye on Irma. You are probably hearing some social media reports of landfall here and landfall there. NO ONE and NO COMPUTER model at this point knows exactly where the hurricane is going to go. All of these are just tools and some of them are better than others. At this point this far out I take them as a grain of salt. It’s important to watch them for trends and to see when they trend to the same solution. If the hurricane makes it to our area it will not be until next Sunday or more likely the following week.
Parts of western New Jersey picked up a good amount of rain yesterday. Stewartsville received 0.83 from the late afternoon thunderstorms and an additional 0.10″ overnight.
While Friday will be cooler than the last few days, the humidity will still be very uncomfortable. The best chances for any severe weather look to be to the south of western New Jersey – but not that far away. So keep an eye to the sky.
Good news is nicer weather returns for the weekend. Then look for another warm/hot/humid spell next week. It is summer after all!
As you can see on the radar above, the far norther and western locations are seeing some sleet or wet snow mixed in. This is mostly at the higher elevations.
Conditions will continue to deteriorate this rest of the day into the evening. Rain will continue to become steadier and heavier and winds will pick up. Stewartsville has recorded a wind gust to 31 at 11:46. There have been wind gusts in the 50’s closer to the shore.
A large complex storm system in the eastern half of the nation is going to evolve into a wind and rain maker for western new jersey area. This is part of the same storm system that brought deadly severe weather to the southeast yesterday.
Look for rain to develop today and become heavier and steadier as the day continues. Look for 3/4″ – 1.5″ of rain in western New Jersey.
Winds will also be a big factor for this storm. We are already seeing wind gusts to near 30 this morning. Look for wind gust to 45 later today into tomorrow. There is a Wind Advisory from the NWS until at least 7 pm tonight.
Since this is late January, we typical think snow when we have strong storms like this. There will be some snow from this system but will be far north and west of western New Jersey. I do expect some sleet to mix in a times especially tonight.
The extended January thaw looks to end before we start a new month.
Look for sun to give way to increasing clouds on Tuesday in western New Jersey. Precipitation should arrive before the evening rush hour. I expect this system to be primarily a rain event along the I-78 corridor. Further to the north, there will be colder air and there could be some sleet and wet snow mixed in at the beginning of the storm.
The above snow forecast map from the Nation Weather Service, only has measurable snow around and north of I-80.
We need to keep an eye on how much cold air get drawn into this system. There are some computer models that are suggesting more wintry weather may happen for a little while further to the south, especially in the beginning. I’ll keep an eye on this tomorrow and will post updates as appropriate.
Stewartsville received just over 1.5″ of rain in the past 24 hours with more on the way! The top left graphic shows how much rain fell in the past 24 hours. The lower left shows the forecast for today into tonight. In general it looks like western New Jersey will receive 1/2 – 1″ of additional rain.
1.41″ of much needed rain fell in Stewartsville. Elsewhere in western New Jersey were similar amounts, less to the north.
Look for humid and warm conditions today into the weekend. A cold front will cross the area early Saturday that could bring some rain showers. This front will hopefully bring air temperatures back to normal for this time of year. Believe it or not the normal high temperature is now in the mid 70’s with overnight low’s in the low 50’s!
So far western New Jersey has picked up about 1″ of rain which is much needed!
Look for rain to continue off and on until about mid day. From that point on we should see showers until later in the day.
This week may have the first official day of Fall but it won’t feel like it. Expect daytime highs Tuesday-Friday to be at least 10 degrees above normal with highs in the mid 80’s!
