High temperature forecast for Monday

I hope everyone enjoyed our Summer preview this past weekend. Stewartsville recorded a high temperature of 79 on Sunday!

It will not be as warm today with sunshine giving way to more clouds through the day. A northwesterly wind increases with gusts up to 35 mph. A few brief showers are possible this afternoon in northern NJ and northeast PA. #pawx #njwx

8-14 temperature outlook

I think it’s safe to say you shouldn’t put away your cool weather clothing just yet. Not only does the remainder of this week look to be cooler than normal, the extended weather forecast has more of the same. 🙁

Late this week into next weekend, we could have a few night again with low temperatures in the 30’s. It would not surprise me to see frost and freeze advisories posted for parts of our area since I know many folks have been itchy to jump the gun with warm weather plantings.

Looking longer range the last third of the month should return to normal temperatures if not even a little above normal.

SPC Severe weather potential for Thursday

In what’s the third day in a row, there is a potential for some severe convective weather in our area. What should be noted is that the risk for today is only slight where the last two days it was enhanced. So what does this mean? I don’t expect to see as many (or perhaps any) tornado warnings and just thunderstorms. Any strong thunderstorm can contain vivid lightning, downpours, gusty winds and hail.

The slight risk area is also further to the south and west as compared to yesterday. This may result in more of the storms in that area.

Flash Flood Watch this afternoon and evening

Since this is now the third day in a row some portions or western New Jersey have received heavy rain, a Flash Flood watch is in effect from 2 – 10 pm. These will be from the downpours associated with thunderstorms.

As always keep an eye to the sky. I will try and keep the facebook/twitter page updated as time permits.

5 Day NWS forecast

After a wild Tuesday weather-wise, we are much calmer, cooler and wetter today. Many locations yesterday reported strong wind gusts (46 in Stewartsville), heavy rain (0.42″ in Stewartsville), hail (1/4″ report in Stewartsville) and more. There was even a tornado warning to our west in eastern PA. There were also other tornado warnings in the region. One was just confirmed in Putnam county.

Today’s showers will continue on and off. Tomorrow we should get a little bit of a break but there is a threat of more rain on Friday. There is some disagreement on how far north the rain will come on Friday. If it gets into western New Jersey, we will easily see an additional 1-2″ of rain. If it stays to our south, less.

SPC thunderstorm outlook for today

Scattered showers and thundershowers moved through western New Jersey later yesterday afternoon and evening. Stewartsville recorded 0.03″ of rain.

While today’s high temperature may not hit 90 like yesterday, the increased humidity will make it feel more uncomfortable.

As you can see in the map above, there is an increased chance over yesterday of some thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening. After 4 pm looks to be the starting time.

If you’re not a fan of extreme heat so early in the warm weather season good news is the weekend will feature closer to seasonable temperatures. 70’s for Saturday and 60’s for Sunday.

SPC Thunderstorm chances this afternoon and evening

Welcome to Summer! No it’s not officially summer yet but it sure does feel like it!

With the sudden warm temperatures comes the possibility of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Today is no different. With the sudden heating of the atmosphere is resulting in some instability that could give part of western New Jersey some descent thunderstorm potential later on this afternoon and evening. The best chances are further to the north as seen in the map above.

Friday will be a rinse and repeat of today with perhaps even stronger chances of thunderstorms in the afternoon
