22. July 2019 · Comments Off on Heat Wave Over But Humidity Remains For Now · Categories: Flash Floods, thunderstorms

96 was the high temperature in Stewartsville over the weekend. Combine that with a 90+ high on Friday and we have another heat wave in the books for Summer of 2019.

Some scattered thunderstorms helped bring an end to the heat last evening. Stewartsville recorded 0.23″ of rain. Other locations received more and some less. there were some scattered reports of power outages and trees down as well.

Speaking of severe weather today we have a better chance of seeing some. The SPC has placed out entire area in a slight risk for seeing some severe weather. Most likely to see downpours and gusty winds. Best time frame is mid afternoon into this evening.

We remain under a Flash Flood Watch into Tuesday. The map above shows that we have a moderate risk of seeing some flash flooding in our entire area with today’s forecast of storms and potential heavy rain showers.

Once we get through the rain later today, tonight and early on Tuesday, we will be rewarded with some lower humidity and delightful mid-summer weather for the remainder of the week!

No I’m not going to start singing a number from Les Miz. Just one more day of the uncomfortable hot and humid weather. Stewartsville did reach 96 degrees yesterday. Many areas reached the mid and upper 90’s in western New Jersey yesterday as well. A few areas received a pop-up thundershower yesterday that perhaps provided a brief break in the weather.

Today will be rinse and repeat complete with the sweat and swelter. There could be a few more pop-up showers and thundershowers later this afternoon and evening. I don’t expect these to be widespread but there should be a few more. there could even be some late this evening as well.

When the cooler weather arrives on Monday it will be accompanied by increase chances for rain and thundershowers. There’s enough of a chance for this that the NWS has issued a Flash Flood Watch for our area.

I expect the first round of showers and perhaps thundershowers mid to late morning into the early afternoon. Then there will be a break until more arrive mid to late afternoon into the evening.

It looks like the front that will be responsible for the cooler weather will be slow to move through our area late Monday into Tuesday morning. A weak low pressure area could form along the front and prolong the chances for rain into Tuesday.

Fear not by later Tuesday lower humidity will arrive along with the more comfortable temperatures. This delightful weather should last the rest of the week!

17. July 2019 · Comments Off on Severe Weather Threat Increased for Later Today · Categories: flood watch, Heat, thunderstorms

So if the Flash Flood Watch along with the above normal heat and humidity wasn’t enough the Storm Prediction Center has increased the risk for our entire area to a slight risk. The greatest threat will be from gusty thunderstorms later today and tonight that will also contain downpours.

We are also in a slight risk for flash flooding from the potential heavy rain that is forecast for later today, tonight and overnight.

Approximately 1″ of rain is forecast across the board for our area. However if you receive a drenching thunderstorm that is slow moving, you will receive much more than that!

Some light to moderate rain is moving into western New Jersey. This is not the main area of rain. This should last 1-2 hours then we will get a break before another larger heavier area approaches later this afternoon and into the evening.

Northeast radar shows the small area of rain now entering our area. Then a break then a larger area that’s now in western PA.

A Flood Watch goes into effect starting at 2 pm today and will remain until late tonight.

11. July 2019 · Comments Off on Flood Watch Issued For Today · Categories: flood watch, thunderstorms

Today will be warmer and more humid than yesterday and in fact any day this week. A cold front is also approaching our area. Both of these will combine to give western New Jersey a good chance of showers and thundershowers today. Some of these rain showers can be heavy. As a result the NWS has issued a flood watch for our area today for the potential of 1-2″ of rain.

While a rain shower can happen anytime, the best time for showers is late this afternoon and early this evening. There could also be some light showers this morning.

Meanwhile the tropics are starting to heat up. A disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico is slowly organizing and should become Barry at some point today. While Barry could reach a hurricane status, its strongest impact should be heavy rainfall. The outer part of this system have already resulted in flooding in New Orleans.

The Storms Prediction Center has expended the potential for severe weather this afternoon and western New Jersey is right in the center.

Look for thunderstorms to develop as early as 2pm but more likely from 4-8 pm. They should arrive from the NW and move to the SE.

Any thunderstorms that do develop and move over your area have the potential for downpours which could cause flash flooding, dangerous lightning and even small hail.

Hot and humid conditions will prevail today with temperatures in the low 90’s and uncomfortable humidity. Cooler and more comfortable weather is in store for Sunday and Monday.

Several areas in western New Jersey topped out at 90 degrees yesterday, Thursday. We’re in line to accomplish that again today with similar weather. If the heat hold for Saturday, that will be our third day and count as the Summer’s first heat wave.

With summer heat and humidity comes the potential for thunderstorms. Saturday looks like the best chances for us. The SPC has placed our entire area in a slight risk for severe weather tomorrow.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of western New Jersey in a slight risk of severe weather today. The timeframe for this should me from mid-afternoon into the evening.

With the potential for more rain, the entire area is also under a Flash Flood Watch thru late tonight.

Amounts of rain will depend on whether or not you receive a heavy downpour as has been the case all week. Some areas receive only a little rain and others get flash floods. Most areas should receive at least another 1/4 – 1/2″ of rain today, much more if you receive a downpour/thunderstorm.

We will get a break in the weather starting Friday afternoon. There could be a leftover shower Friday morning then skies should clear and less humid and more sunshine should return to the area. It will be windy on Friday and breezy on Saturday to greet the first full weekend of Summer 2019!

Next week the heat and humidity return with summer like weather that includes the potential for a typical afternoon/evening thundershower in spots.

01. June 2019 · Comments Off on Mixed Weather This Weekend · Categories: thunderstorms, weather discussion · Tags:

Welcome to June 2019. The above map looks more ominous than it really will be. We should see a mix of sun and clouds most of the day with high temperatures in the mid 80’s.

A weak area of low pressure will be moving by to our north. Anytime after 9 pm today we could see a passing shower or thundershower. This shouldn’t be severe but always keep an eye to the sky.

Tomorrow is a different story. Most of the day should feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high near 80. A cold front will be approaching western New Jersey. This along with warm temperatures has the potential to give us some severe weather once again. the SPC has placed our entire area in a slight risk. The best chance for these will be later in the afternoon and early evening.

Once the cold front pushed through it will give us some beautiful but COOL weather on Monday and Tuesday. The map above shows that our high temperatures on Monday will not get out of the 60’s and be breezy. Monday night we could see low temperatures dip into the 40’s. So the A/C will get a rest for a few days.

30. May 2019 · Comments Off on Third Day In A Row With Severe Weather Potential · Categories: Flash Floods, thunderstorms · Tags: , , ,
SPC Severe weather potential for Thursday

In what’s the third day in a row, there is a potential for some severe convective weather in our area. What should be noted is that the risk for today is only slight where the last two days it was enhanced. So what does this mean? I don’t expect to see as many (or perhaps any) tornado warnings and just thunderstorms. Any strong thunderstorm can contain vivid lightning, downpours, gusty winds and hail.

The slight risk area is also further to the south and west as compared to yesterday. This may result in more of the storms in that area.

Flash Flood Watch this afternoon and evening

Since this is now the third day in a row some portions or western New Jersey have received heavy rain, a Flash Flood watch is in effect from 2 – 10 pm. These will be from the downpours associated with thunderstorms.

As always keep an eye to the sky. I will try and keep the facebook/twitter page updated as time permits.
