Beneficial rains overnight in Stewartsville

Stewartsville received a much appreciated 1.53″ of rain in the last 24 hours as of 7 am Sunday morning. One of pool toys was found across the yard do to some gusty winds. A rare small tree branch was also noted on the front lawn. Thankfully I hardly ever see any tree damage in my neighborhood.

Rainfall totals for Sunday since midnight

How much fell in your neighborhood? Here are northern New Jersey totals since midnight.

Expect the humid weather to continue all week. Along with the humidity will be scattered showers and thundershowers at almost anytime. But no one day looks to be a washout.

Sunny Friday

Get out and enjoy the weather today if you can. Today looks to be the last completely sunny, low humidity and warm day for perhaps a week!

Any sun Saturday will quickly fade with increasing clouds and a chance of showers in the afternoon. Most of the rain on Saturday will hold off until the evening and night time hours. The rain should taper off Sunday morning and there will be some breaks in the weather Sunday during the day. But then there is a chance of late day showers and thundershowers Sunday afternoon and evening. And the humidity will be back.

5 Day NWS Forecast

After that we will have humid weather with a chance of rain each day. These will not be entire wash outs everyday but the humidity will be there. Monday and Tuesday look to have a good chance of rain compared to the others. At least high temperatures will remain in the 80’s even though with the humidity it will feel higher.

SPC has most of northern NJ is slight risk

We need to keep an eye to the sky this afternoon for some stronger storms. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of northern New Jersey in a slight risk of seeing some severe weather today. the greatest threats will be strong winds, small hail and heavy downpours.

Radar early Tuesday morning

As of early this morning there is some rain and thunderstorms in western PA and slowly heading in our direction via a NE movement.

Walking out the door this morning feels like you’re vacationing at a NJ shore house. The only problem is we are far inland! It is very warm and humid this morning. Relief is on the way via a cold front that will move through tonight. The result, after some story weather, will be delightful and comfortable Wednesday through Friday.

SPC has slight risk of severe weather to the north today

Today will be warmer and more humid than the last several days. This is due to a cold front approaching the area. There is a slight risk of some severe weather, mostly to the north as seen in the map above. Best chance and timing will be 3 pm – 9 pm and in the Poconos. All of the short term models have the showers deceasing as it heads to the south and east. Which is unfortunate since we are very dry in some areas of western New Jersey.

10 Day forecast

The rest of the week it will be still warm but less humidity than today. Warmer and more humid weather expected for the weekend. Nothing too unusual – typically summer time weather!

TS Chris

Elsewhere in the South East, Tropical Storm Chris is expected to become a hurricane latter today. But fret not, it will move to the north and east and not impact our weather unless you are heading to the shore where rip current will be increasing.

NWS 5 day forecast

The heatwave is over and the reward is at hand. We will not only have a wonder weekend of weather but by July standards, it might even be a touch cool!

Low temperatures Saturday morning

Lows this morning were in the mid 50’s with some areas in the low 50’s! Hard to come by in July!

Today we have wonderful sunshine with a high near 80. That means most of the day temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70’s with low low humidity.

Sunday is a repeat of today just a little warmer with highs in the low to mid 80’s.

Looking ahead some heat and humidity returns by Tuesday of next week but it should not be as intense as the last heat wave nor last as long. More typical summer time heat with highs near 90.

Enjoy!

5 Day NWS Forecast

No this is not a reprise of Les Miserable – just one more day of the very hot and humid weather for western New Jersey. We then cool off about 10 degrees with a very comfortable weekend ahead with lower humidity.

Before we get there we may have some much needed rain from thundershowers on Friday. Details as we get closer.

Hurricane Jose creates high surf at the Jersey shore

Hurricane Jose creates high surf at the Jersey shore

Has the pleasure to enjoy a top 10 summer beach day yesterday afternoon on Long Beach Island. Light wind, warm temperatures and a gentle breeze (and low crowds) made for a really nice late summer visit.

Western New Jersey will see more clouds than sun today into the new week along with warm and humid conditions. A scattered shower can not be ruled out.

Overnight computer guidance shifted Hurricane Jose a little more to the west. If this verifies, we will see some rain and somewhat breezy conditions here on Tuesday. The potential damage at the jersey shore will be much greater with sustained multi-day beach erosion and tropical storm force winds.

A computer model forecast on Hurricane Jose

A computer model forecast on Hurricane Jose

Jose may actually be slow to leave and stay around until the end of the week at least. If he is slow to leave the cooler waters at our latitude should help to weaken the storm and shouldn’t be much more than a low pressure system at the end of its life-cycle.

Soon to be Hurricane Maria forms

Soon to be Hurricane Maria forms

Maria is expected to form and strengthen rapidly and travel over the same areas impacted by Irma which is very unfortunate. She is forecast to become a major hurricane (cat 3) and travel up the east coast offshore to North Carolina area

SPC Severe weather outlook for Tuesday

SPC Severe weather outlook for Tuesday

Happy Labor Day 2017 everyone! Well more seasonable weather has finally made an return appearance. It seems so hot today but the reality is 80 for a high is normal! More of the same tomorrow with humidity too. We need to be on the lookout for the potential for severe weather later on Tuesday into the evening and early night. The SPC has put most of western new jersey in the slight risk category.

The severe weather is a strong cold front that will be passing into our area that will make us on the cool side again. Unfortunately this front is going to stall not that far away from us and keep the chance for rain showers into the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. We look to dry out for Friday and Saturday at this point.

NHC 5 day Irma forecast

NHC 5 day Irma forecast

All eyes continue to keep an eye on major hurricane Irma. She has moved slightly south and west and now look to pose more of a threat to the islands and possibly northern Cuba as well. The US risk right now appears to be Florida.

Overnight rainfall

Overnight rainfall

We are waking up to a soggy Sunday morning this Labor Day weekend. In Stewartsville 1.03″ of new rain was recorded in the past 24 hours ending at 8 am. This rain is due in part from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey.

The rain should taper off to showers by mid day but I can see more showers and perhaps even a brief thundershower later this afternoon as an upper level low passes through the area. Monday’s weather looks much nicer and warmer!

The last of the kids returning to school on Tuesday will be greeted by warm weather and another chance of soggy weather on Wednesday and Thursday.

NHC forecast for Hurricane Irma

NHC forecast for Hurricane Irma

We are still keeping an eye on Irma. You are probably hearing some social media reports of landfall here and landfall there. NO ONE and NO COMPUTER model at this point knows exactly where the hurricane is going to go. All of these are just tools and some of them are better than others. At this point this far out I take them as a grain of salt. It’s important to watch them for trends and to see when they trend to the same solution. If the hurricane makes it to our area it will not be until next Sunday or more likely the following week.
