NWS Snow forecast for Thursday

NWS Snow forecast for Thursday

Another cold and windy day in western new jersey. Stewartsville morning low temperature of 9 as the kids return to school after winter break. Today will be a few degrees warmer than yesterday and Wednesday looks to be another few degrees warmer with less wind.

Then our attention turns to the storm for Thursday. There is no doubt that a major coastal storm will form and move up the east coast. The question is how close does it get to us. Eastern new england will get hit hard with this storm. I do believe it will snow in western New Jersey and my forecast at the moment is for 1-3″ with more south and east and less north and especially west. I will continue to track this storm and provide updates.

We’re back in the freezer after some light snowfall on Saturday. High temperatures today should be in the mid to upper teens.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

Anyone venturing into New York City to see the ball drop will be experiencing the second coldest NYE on record. Even if you are not going into the city today it will be very cold and breezy so bundle up and be safe!

We may “warm up” to the upper 20’s mid week then all eyes turn to a storm that will be mostly staying off shore as it looks right now. Will it trend further to the west and impact us Thursday? We’ll keep an eye on it.

Once that storm passes, it looks to usher in EVEN COLDER AIR that what we’ve experienced so far this winter!

Radar at 7:30 am

As you wake up this Saturday morning you will find light snow falling in western New Jersey with temperatures in the mid teens.

NWS Snow forecast

NWS Snow forecast

As seen in the radar above, the heaviest bands of snow appear to be setting up to our south. As a result those locations could see up to 3″ of snow. The rest of the area should see up to 2″ of light snow.

The NWS has issued a winter weather advisory for areas to our south.

The light snow should let up by early afternoon. Then we should see some flurries or perhaps some snow showers this afternoon. Then more bitter cold air returns after our “balmy” day today…

NWS forecast for snow on Saturday

NWS forecast for snow on Saturday

Still cold out but at least the wind is not as strong. As of right now we’re at the high temperature for yesterday and it’s only 1:30 pm so hopefully we’ll get in the low to mid 20’s.

Periods of light snow should arrive just after daybreak on Saturday and move in from SW to NE. I still believe we are going to receive a coasting to 2″ overall in western New Jersey. Recent computer guidance is suggesting the “heaviest” band will be from NW to SE across western NJ.

Something to keep in mind is it will be in the mid to upper 20’s tomorrow during the snow so our snow ratio will be higher. This will make the snow lighter and fluffier. Usually snow like that accumulates more (but also compacts down more too)

NWS snow forecast for Saturday

This cold weather period has been quite impressive. Most areas of western New Jersey did not get out of the teens for high temperatures today! Furthermore the New Year Eve weather looks to be the coldest since the 1960’s!

The cold weather looks to remain at least for another week. The only positive note is there will be times when it won’t be as windy which should make it *feel* warmer at least. Tomorrow, Friday is one of those less windy days.

Saturday doesn’t look too wind either. But we should have some periods of light snow to deal with. The system doesn’t look that impressive for western New Jersey. At this time I’m thinking coating to 1-2″ max. If it wasn’t so cold I would forecast less but since it is so cold the snow will be light and fluffy.

Then back into the windy freezer on Sunday and Monday. Some of the long range computer models are hinting at a possible coastal snow storm by the middle of next week. I’m not biting yet since several days ago they showed this Saturday’s storm for us being significant of which it won’t be – for us.

Stay warm!

NWS snow forecast for Saturday into Sunday morning

NWS snow forecast for Saturday into Sunday morning

After a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon clouds will increase later on as a warm front approaches western New Jersey. The warm front may give us some snow showers this evening.

Then a weak area of low pressure will form along the front early Saturday morning and move into our area. This will give us some light snow early Saturday morning. In southern sections of western New Jersey this should change to light rain showers as warmer air moves in Saturday mid day and early afternoon. Then colder air will filter back into western New Jersey and change any rain over to light snow. This light snow should continue off and on into Sunday morning.

How much are we talking about from both events? 1-3″ with lower amounts to the south and closer to 3″ (or perhaps a little more) in northern and elevated areas.

Yes technically Spring does arrive Monday morning but it certainly won’t feel or look like it. After colder weather on Sunday, there will be a brief warm up on Monday and Tuesday. But that will be followed by another very cold outbreak for Wednesday.

It’s blue skies, why the weather advisory? A couple of reasons: 1) there can be some snow showers today that can leave anywhere from a coating to an inch or two and b) the strong winds of today that will cause blowing and drifting of the snow resulting in reduced visibility.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING...

* LOCATIONS...Most of eastern Pennsylvania and northwestern New Jersey.

* HAZARDS...Snow and blowing snow.

* ACCUMULATIONS...Up to 2 inches of new snow accumulation.

* IMPACTS...Blowing and drifting snow will lead to reduced visibility especially in open areas. In addition, isolated snow
squalls today could lead to additional quick snow accumulations, reduced visibility and exacerbating already hazardous driving conditions.

* WINDS...Northwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

* TIMING...Blowing snow is possible through the day. Snow squalls will be possible from mid morning through early this evening.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow means that visibilities will be limited due to a combination of falling and
blowing snow. Use caution when traveling, especially in open areas.

Heavy snow in Stewartsville, NJ

Heavy snow in Stewartsville, NJ

The Blizzard warning continues for all of western New Jersey. The powerful storm has formed and is impacting the area. Stewartsville has received 7.8″ of snow as of 10 am this morning. There has been more snow to our north and west.

The storm has formed further west than originally thought. This has allowed the upper atmosphere to be warmer than originally thought. This has resulted in sleet from time to time. Those areas that received a lot of sleet will see lower snow totals. All areas will change back to snow as the storm pulls away.

There has been several reports of thundersnow/sleet in NYC! This gives you an example of how powerful this storm is.

The areas in the blue hatch are where the heaviest snow will form from this storm going forward. Note this is further north and west as southern and eastern areas are getting sleet.

Winds will continue to be a factor.

The snow totals forecast has been adjusted due to all the sleet. Southern and eastern areas of western New Jersey will receive 8-12″ while further north will receive 12-24″ – higher totals in areas that do NOT change/mix with sleet

You should keep your cell phones charged and make sure your rechargeable batteries are all set to go, just in case. Also make sure you have some candles, preferably the ones with glass on the sides so it’s safe if it tips over.

The above map is predicted wind gusts by a computer model for tomorrow. As you can see we may see some good wind gusts in western New Jersey tomorrow!
