Tonight will be another chilly December evening with partly cloudy skies.

Sunday will feature more sunshine with high’s perhaps in the low 40’s.

So it’s a nice weekend to start/finish shopping, decorate outdoors and enjoy the season!

We had more impressive snow showers yesterday. One went by in the late morning and slowly sank to the south. I thought we were done for the day as there was nothing else to the north. In fact the skies cleared somewhat and the temperature went up a little and melted most of the snow on the ground.

The almost out of no where a persistent snow band setup and trained over my area for a couple of hours

SnowBand-20141211-1356SnowBand-20141211-1351

I picked up 1.1” of new snow. I also had 0.6” on the ground in the morning.

This morning, due to compression and evaporation, I only have about 1” left on the ground. There are some icy spots on sidewalks.

We should only have scattered flurries today. We might even see some periods of sunshine. Temperatures will remain in the 30’s today as well as into the weekend. Quite weather pattern with next chance of precipitation next Tuesday afternoon.

Long range weather maps continue to look “interesting” the days before Christmas. Time will tell if we have a Whte Christmas or not.

6/10" snow picked up last evening

We picked up 7/10” of snow in the snow showers that primarily visited the area yesterday afternoon and evening. We also some some additional snow showers overnight. This morning there was 6/10” of snow still on the ground. More importantly it was below freezing and the driveway was snow covered. My road was clear – I suspect the excellent road department spread salt yesterday.

Look for today to be similar to yesterday. Partly to mostly cloudy, brisk with scattered snow showers. High temperatures should be in the mid 30’s. This weather will continue into the weekend but we will loose the snow showers. Next chance of precipitation is next Tuesday at this point.

We received just over 4/10” of rain in the last 24 hours. So far the storm total is around 1”. Heavier precipitation has moved out of the area. We are now left with rain showers that will occasionally mix with and change to snow showers especially overnight Wednesday in Thursday as colder air gets pulled down. Look for a coating in a few locations. Winds will continue brisk today and temperatures will stay in the 30’s.

The storm will finally move out of the area on Friday and tranquil conditions are forecast into the weekend.

Rain started off as freezing rain Tuesday morning

Monday turned out much cooler than originally forecasted by all. The clouds increased faster than anticipated and the cold high pressure to our north continued to pump cold air in all day. As a result we went into the upper 20’s last night as the rain moved in.

In southern section the temperature is already just above freezing. Northern and western section will take longer to climb above freezing. Then we can look forward to periods of heavy rain today. Temperatures will remain in the 30’s.

We received just over 1/2” of rain and freezing rain overnight.

The storm now looks to be a little colder overall than was originally anticipated. As a result, when the storm starts to pull away slowly and colder air starts to move in early Wednesday morning, the rain should change back to wet snow. This could result in a coating to and inch or two – more to the North and West.

It will turn windy today and should remain so into Thursday.

A powerful Nor’easter is expected to move into western NJ beginning late tonight on through Thursday morning with heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding, and even some wet snow as the storm departs.

Clouds will lower and thicken today as high pressure departs.   Temperatures will rise into the lower to mid 30’s after a chilly start in the teens this morning.

Rain will develop late tonight, after midnight.  While all rain is expected of much of the region, a mix of snow, sleet, and rain can be expected for northern and western sections.

The low pressure system will move northward tomorrow towards the New Jersey coastal waters.  Heavy rainfall can be expected in our region as the low pressure system moves slowly northward.  The rain will mix with and change over to snow over northeastern Pennsylvania and far northwestern New Jersey with accumulating snowfall by Tuesday afternoon and evening.  The heavy rainfall will lead to some stream flooding as over 2″ of rain can be expected.   Winds will be from the northeast to north at 15 to 25 mph.   Temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 30’s.

The low pressure system will slowly lift northward through Long Island and into southern New England on Wednesday.  Bands of rain will continue to rotate through the region. As colder air builds in behind the storm, the rain will mix over to snow through the day.   Snow showers will linger on through Thursday morning with windy conditions expected.  Winds will be from the northwest at 10 to 20 mph.  Temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday will range from the mid to upper 20’s for lows and upper 30’s to lower 40’s for highs.

Sunday’s weather looks to be much improved today over Saturday. In the last 24 hours we picked up just over 1/2” of rain and the storm total was just under 1” of rain.

Sunday will feature partly sunny skies but brisk with highs in the 30’s and breezy if not windy conditions. Monday will be similar but less wind and increasing clouds.

Map above is the forecast for Wednesday morning. You can see a strong coastal storm nearby. This will bring out area mostly a heavy wind driven rain. We will receive another 1-2” of rain. There could be some wet snow mixed in at times and a slush coating is not out of the question. I will have more on that as we get closer to the event.

Running late so need to be brief. The current break in the rain (picked up 0.42” last night) should resume this afternoon and last into the evening. Highs in the upper 40’s to near 50. Sunday should be mostly dry with some sunshine.

The storm for next week looks to be late Monday night, Tuesday into Wednesday. Looks to be mostly a cold rain but some wet snow can not be rules out yet. More on this tomorrow or Monday.

Skies are already mostly cloudy this morning. Look for skies to remain mostly cloudy with high temperatures in the mid 40’s. A few rain showers may sneak in late in the day and early this evening. Look for a steadier rain to arrive mid to late evening and continue overnight.

The rain looks to arrive in two batches. The first will be this evening and overnight. Then there appears to be a break during the day (could be some drizzle and showers) with a steadier rain returning in the afternoon into the overnight.

Look for about 1” rain from this event. Sunday looks drier at this point. The next chance of precipitation will be around Tuesday. Could be a significant storm or either rain/snow. I’ll keep you posted!

Today will be slightly below seasonable  temperature wise with a high only in the low 40’s. The partly sunny skies should help compared to the last few days.

Friday will feature increasing clouds with rain coming in the evening. I don’t think we will have too much to worry about as far as snow or sleet in the beginning in southern sections. However further to the north and west (especially elevated sections) may have some sleet/snow in the beginning.

The rain looks to continue and become heavy at times on Saturday unfortunately as the Phillipsburg Stateliners football team will be heading to Rutgers Stadium for the State championship game. History has shown this game never gets pleasant weather. The picture above was taken at last years championship game. Snow started falling during the game. During half time they had to plow the field!

Sunday looks to be somewhat dryer but I’m starting to get concerned about a potential “sneaky” coastal storm for Monday-Tuesday that may have some cold weather surprises. Not all of the computer models are showing this yet but the consistent European one has been showing this for a while. I’ll post more as it becomes available.
