Northern NJ rainfall as of 8am

When it rains it pours. Or so it goes in Northern New Jersey this late Summer, Fall, and now the beginning of Winter. Seems kind of ironic as the Winter Solstice arrives later today at 5:23 pm we have record warmth and heavy rains. 1.21″ recorded in Stewartsville as of 7:30 am. More rain totals in the map above

More rain on the way

More rain is on the way today. It will be periods of rain off an on. Probably no more than 1/4-1/2″ in western locations but more will fall to the east. Most of it should fall in the morning but there could be some more showers later in the day and early evening.

Record warmth

And have you stepped outside yet? You should. Very warm and humid. Don’t usually use the humid word in the winter but that it is. So if your house is dry, open the windows when its not raining!

S snow forecast for Thursday
NWS snow forecast for Thursday

A weak low pressure system will be moving through our area late tonight into Thursday. Sometimes these systems, although weak, are sneaky and can deposit more precipitation than originally thought.

The NWS is forecasting less than 1″ for our area. This is a good forecast. There may be some areas that see a little more than this in areas where the steady snow sets up (if there is any steady snow bands). This should primarily be snow showers

After this system moves by some milder temperatures will be visiting our area. Nothing crazy warm but closer to normal if not slightly above.

Of course with the warmer temperatures comes rain. Our streak of rain free days will come to a close later Friday into Saturday. Right now we expect 1/2″ – 1″ of rain on Saturday. Rain showers may persist into Sunday but Sunday should be the better day of the weekend at this point. Next week looks to have high temperature days in the low 40’s.

NWS 5 day forecast

Try as we might, Spring is no where near to be found. Strong gusty winds continue today, Friday with high temperatures only in the upper 30’s which is 10 degrees below normal.

Winds should die down tonight and over the weekend but early risers on Saturday morning will feel low to mid 20’s cold temperatures.

Dry conditions remain until Tuesday. Then we focus our attention on what could be the 4th coastal storm of the last couple of weeks. As of right now it could start as early as later on Tuesday and last, in some fashion or another, into Thursday morning. We’ll be keeping an eye on this and will have updates as we get closer.

NWS Snow Forecast for Wednesday

I wanted to get an update out for the snow storm on Wednesday, March 6. I also want to give an idea of storm timing. IN general things are slowing down a little.

This Evening

There will be some rain or wet snow shower around starting at 8 pm or thereafter, These will be showers in nature and generally not a big deal. The temperature will be above freezing

Over night

Rain and snow showers will become periods of light wet snow. I’m expecting a coating to a couple of inches by daybreak tomorrow

Wednesday Morning

Many folks may wake up (especially early) and look out the window and say ‘this is our big storm’ and be confused/disappointed. I do not anticipate the snow getting heavy until mid to late morning. Certainly by lunch time the snow should be coming down hard at the rate of 1-2″ per hour

Wednesday Afternoon

From mid to late morning through most of the afternoon is where we will see our heaviest snow. It should come in waves/bands. Where these bands setup will determine who gets what. Look for snow at the rate of 1-2″ per hour

Wednesday Evening

The snow should start to taper down from west to east from early evening on as it looks now. There will still be periods of light snow and flurries into the overnight.

Snow Amounts

I’m pretty confident western New Jersey will receive 6-12″ of snow. There will be some locally higher amounts where the heavy snow bands setup.

and Easton
341 PM EST Thu Mar 1 2018

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM FRIDAY TO 4 AM
EST SATURDAY...

* WHAT...Wet snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6
inches at higher elevations above 800 feet and 2 inches or less
  in the valleys are expected.

* WHERE...In New Jersey, Warren and Morris counties. In
  Pennsylvania, Northampton county.

* WHEN...Rain will transition to snow initially along the high-
elevation ridges around midday Friday and then closer to mid
afternoon in the valleys. The snow will be heavy at times Friday
afternoon and evening with snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour
possible. The snow is expected to end from west to east
  overnight.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on very difficult travel conditions,
including during the evening commute on Friday. The combination
of strong northwest winds gusting to 50 mph and heavy snow
could create near-blizzard conditions with visibilities below
one-half mile at times. The heavy, wet nature of the snow and
strong winds will likely cause damage to trees and power lines
that will lead to scattered power outages, especially at higher
  elevations.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for wet snow means periods of wet snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while
driving. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling
from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

5 Day Forecast

Another rainy weekend. Oh boy. Western New Jersey picked up over 1″ of rainfall. Let’s not hear any talk of a drought for a while 🙂

Once the morning clouds and fog burn off we should see some sunshine later and should have another above normal high temperature near 50. Tuesday and Wednesday look like very nice late February days as well with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low 50’s.

Then our attention turns to increasing clouds on Thursday in what will be a rainy windy storm that will impact the area later Thursday through Friday. This will be near a full moon so some coastal flooding is also possible. This may end as a little wet snow in spots. Details as we get closer.

NWS snow forecast

Sunny and cold Saturday morning will have increasing clouds as the day wears on. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30’s. Look for light snow to arrive as early as late afternoon and continue into the evening and night time hours.

My forecast remains at 2-4″ which is slightly lower than the NWS snow forecast pictured above. I think southern and eastern sections of western New Jersey will see some mixing of sleet and perhaps even rain at times especially towards the end of the storm. Temperatures will struggle to get to or below freezing tonight. This will result in a wet snow that will accumulate more on colder surfaces than treated surfaces. This will also be a very fast moving storm that could be done as early as just after midnight in western sections! There is a possibility I could be too low but I’m sticking with my gut for now.

NWS Severity Index

The NWS has issued a winter storm watch for Saturday night. The map above is experimental and shows the potential impact from the next storm. For western New Jersey it’s a moderate impact.

NWS snow forecast

Above is the NWS snow forecast map. At this time my snow forecast remains the same: 2-4.” I still believe the computer models are showing too much precipitation for this fast moving storm. Plus there will be warm air not too far away and someone will be seeing mixed precipitation. Furthermore since it will be relatively warm the snow ratio will be low, perhaps not even 10:1 in southern and eastern areas.

Look for the snow to begin late afternoon and early evening Saturday and be mostly over before sunrise Sunday.

351 AM EST Fri Feb 16 2018

...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH
LATE SATURDAY NIGHT...

* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6
  inches are possible.

* WHERE...The Lehigh Valley and Berks County, the southern Poconos
  and far northwestern New Jersey.

* WHEN...From Saturday evening into very early Sunday morning.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on difficult travel conditions.
Significant reductions in visibility are possible. There remains
some uncertainty with how much precipitation extends this far
westward, however there is the potential for a short period of
heavy snow Saturday night which could lead to a rapid
  deterioration in road conditions.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant
snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue
to monitor the latest forecasts.
