Snow showers move into western NJ on Wednesday afternoon

Stewartsville wound up with 1.4″ of snow and sleet from the last storm. The gusty winds brought in some snow showers that sparked a snow squall warning for part of the area today.

Looking ahead nothing too out of the ordinary – no big warm ups and not arctic cold.

The the snow on Saturday afternoon holds together it should stay south of our area as it appears now. Another system will move through Sunday night. Right now this looks like some light snow. The next potential larger storm is about a week away, next Wednesday.

Radar shows sleet approaching from the S and W

Overnight Stewartsville received a coating of snow – about 0.2″ More snow was anticipated on the front end. Further to the west in PA about 1″ of snow has fallen.

Warmer air is already making its move towards our area. Sleet is falling in many locations in PA to our S and W. The bright colored line on the radar image above show where the sleet line is. While it’s possible we may switch back to snow for a bit once the sleet start, I believe any additional snow accumulation should be minimal to a coating to 2″

Now the next threat is how long do we have sleet and/or freezing rain before we go above freezing. I would anticipate several hours of these conditions. In fact it could last most of the daylight day. The southern and eastern locations should be the first to go above freezing and then slowly creep north.

NWS snow forecast for Monday morning

Much colder albeit seasonable temperatures have returned to western New Jersey this Saturday morning. temperatures are in the 20’s and there’s a stiff breeze. Winds will continue to be gusty today with gusts into the 30’s at times.

A weak system will move to our south late Sunday night into Monday morning. It should be cold enough for all snow. At this time it looks like western New Jersey should receive a coating to 2″ with higher amounts to the south.

Next storm system Monday night into Tuesday

Then our next system looks to approach our area late Monday night into Tuesday. This system will have more moisture to work with. It will be cold enough to start out as snow initially as we’ve seen with many storms this winter. We should receive several inches of snow before warmer air moves in and changes us over to a wintry mix and eventually rain. This storm system has the potential to give us 2-4″ or 3-5″ of snow before a changeover with higher amounts to the north. I’ll update this as we get closer to the event.

Radar shows rain moving out of our area

We received another 1/4″ of rain or so overnight. The rain is now pushing out of our area and brighter and sunny skies should return

temperatures may go up to the upper 40’s to low 50’s before a cold front pushes through our area that will bring colder temperatures back to our area. The winds will also pick up and become gusty at time. Colder and windy weather will last into Saturday.

Our next chance of wintry weather will happen late Sunday night into Monday morning. At this time it looks like another coating to perhaps 1″ of snow for our area.

Then on Tuesday another storm system will approach our area. This storm will have more moisture and will show us many different types of wintry precipitation. Right now it looks to start off as snow and perhaps accumulate a couple of inches. Then warmer air will move into our area and mix then changeover to sleet and perhaps eventually rain. More on this as we get closer to the event.

Phil does not see his shadow in 2019. Image courtesy News

In a rare occurrence, the famous weather prognosticator groundhog Phil did not see his shadow this morning. Legend has it this means an early spring for our part of the country.

Don’t get too excited yet – his track record is not stellar. Of course we shouldn’t be too surprised about this. After all he’s a groundhog.

After the recent frigid weather in the east today’s news will certainly be welcome for all the still frozen from the cold weather.

NWS snow forecast overnight Sunday into Monday morning

If you haven’t been outside yet today you should. Hardly any wind, brilliant sunshine and temperatures in the low to mid 40’s. It’s quite pleasant!

Clouds will be on the increase later today as a weak system approaches our area overnight. MOst of the area should receive very light precipitation – mostly a coating to 1″ of snow. Areas to the south of I-78 will see some rain mixed in. Further south than that it would be mostly rain. Further to the north, especially Sussex county you could receive closer to 2″. I like to call this “mood enhancing snow” as it won’t amount to too much and should have minimal impact to transportation. Unfortunately it should be gone by Christmas Eve night and day.

NWS rain forecast by late Friday

When it rains it pours as the saying goes. More heavy rain, and perhaps even some thunderstorms are in our forecast for the second half of Thursday into Friday morning. The heaviest period might be Thursday night into early Friday morning

the above map shows over 2″ of rain region wide when the storm is done. There could even be more than this, closer to 3″ in some parts of central Jersey.

Winds will be brisk as well, especially in elevated areas and closer to the shore.

I would not be surprised to see some small stream and river flooding as well.

The only good news is we will be on the warm side of this storm and could see high temperatures near 60 on Friday!

7 Day NWS forecast

Hopefully everyone had a safe, warm and Happy Thanksgiving!

Cold morning today with a record low temperature of 9 f in Stewartsville. Some places further to the north were closer to 0! Way too cold for NOvember!

Warmer air is heading into western New Jersey. Unfortunately it will be accompanied by more rain that we don’t need. We will have another mostly clear and calm night that will allow temperatures to drop but not be as cold as this morning.

Any early morning sunshine on Saturday will be replaced with increasing clouds and rain arriving as early as midday. In fact if it comes in early, there’s a chance it could be freezing rain. I don’t expect this to be widespread at this time and will apply mostly to locations to our west. The rain will be heavy at times Saturday evening and night as we should expect another 1-1.25″ of rain. The rain should be over early Sunday morning and SUnday will turn into a nice day, but still cool for this time of year.

Looking ahead more rain Monday afternoon and chilly temperatures continue for most of the upcoming week. At least it feels like the holiday season!

New Jersey Weather Observers Sought for Rutgers-Coordinated Network

New Brunswick, N.J. (Nov. 20, 2018) – The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS), a nationwide volunteer network for observing precipitation, is seeking volunteer weather observers throughout the Garden State.

“Adding new observers in your community will provide a detailed picture of rain and snowfall patterns and benefit critical weather-related decision-making,” said David A. Robinson, the New Jersey state climatologist at Rutgers and NJ CoCoRaHS co-coordinator.

The New Jersey program is run by the Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist. Mathieu Gerbush, assistant New Jersey state climatologist, is program co-coordinator. Robinson also oversees the Rutgers NJ Weather Network, which provides near-real time and longer-term data on weather conditions in the state.

The community collaboration has more than 15,000 active observers in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, the Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands, including more than 250 in New Jersey.

NWS snow forecast

A system to our north will be giving us some light rain chances today and tomorrow. Further to the north, closer to I-80 and above, there could be some slushy snow accumulations. Nothing like last time…

7 Day forecast

After that get ready for some cold turkey. Thanksgiving day (and morning and Black Friday morning) looks very cold, especially for this time of year. Luckily the cold won’t last too long…
