Astronomical spring began at 11:33 AM today, Sunday, March 20, 2022. Hopefully, everyone took deep breaths of the unseasonably warm temperatures recently. Normal high temperatures this time of year are only in the low 50’s.
The CPC outlook above indicates below average temperatures to close out this month and begin next. #NJwx
The Storms Prediction Center has upgraded our entire area to a slight risk of severe weather later today. Previously the greatest threat of severe weather looked to be in PA.
Even though the dynamics of possible severe weather has increased, it could be a lot worse. The line looks to weaken as it moves east later this afternoon and be a broken line instead of a solid line.
We shouldn’t receive more than a 1/10″ of rain overall today unless you find yourself under one of the heavier cells.
The greatest threat will be from strong gusty winds
Dense fog has developed over most of our area this morning. We are under a dense fog advisory through 10 am.
What does fog look like from up above? Here you go. The white areas are the fog, and the dark areas are the ground. Some areas are seeing peaks of sun.
Once the fog burns off, the temperature on Friday will rise nicely and reach the low to mid 70’s!
Our sunny weather on Friday will be short lived as clouds will increase later today and tonight as a low-pressure system moves through our area. Early Saturday morning some rain showers will move into our area as a warm front approaches. Then we could see a break in the precipitation until a cold front moves through later in the afternoon into the early evening. Some areas may even hear some rumbles of thunder! The strongest risk of severe weather seen on the map above is to our west on Saturday.
Sunday looks to be cooler but still seasonable for this time of year with clouds and breezy conditions with highs in the 50’s. If you have any outdoor work this weekend by recommendation would be Saturday late morning once the morning rain showers end and before they return later in the day,
Saturday will be another interesting weather day with lots of changes. Look for rain to arrive overnight. Then Saturday morning the rain will start to mix with sleet and snow and then changeover to all snow by mid to late morning. Then wet snow, heavy at times until mid to late afternoon. Expect about 3-6″ of wet snow. With rapidly falling temperatures on Saturday, we will see more snow accumulate on roadways than the other day.
The wind will be another factor along with the falling temperatures. Looks for strong SW winds in the morning shifting into the NW and gusting to 40+mph at times. A wind advisory is in effect for the entire area on Saturday into the overnight.
So, we had high temperatures in the 70’s on Sunday and Monday and snow is in the forecast for Wednesday? Why yes, it is. Welcome to March weather in NJ!
Wide swings of temperatures are common in Spring and Fall. This year will be no exception.
Wednesday will be a wet and raw day in comparison with the slightly humid weather of Monday. We could even see a coating of wet snow on colder surfaces. There could be upwards of 2″ up north in elevated normally colder locations.
Cooler and windy conditions this weekend and early this new week are not welcome compared to the warmer weather of last week. Winter will let us know the calendar does not turn to Spring until Saturday. We could see some light wintry mix on Tuesday. Early Tuesday morning, as well as late afternoon and evening, are the best times to see any wintry mix. Other times it will just be cold rain showers. If anything does accumulate, it will be on colder, shaded surfaces of a coating to less than 1″
Wet weather moves back in on Thursday afternoon. This has the potential to give our area the first decent rainfall in over two weeks.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the weather looks seasonable with warmer temperatures back in the forecast for next week this time
As is often the case in Spring and Fall, we get wide temperature swings. This week will be another example of that.
The weekend chill abated somewhat on Sunday with a high temperature in the mid 60’s in western New Jersey (especially southern locations) on Sunday. Monday we’re back in the 50’s with scattered rain shower. The skies should clear later today – that combined with light winds will set us up for the potential for frost in many areas tonight. the is certainly better that the 2 nights of freeze warnings but still important to point out as some have begun their outdoor plantings of sensitive plants.
Wednesday morning also looks below normal but hopefully a few degrees warmer to ward off the frost potential.
Looking ahead we finally will start to see some normal and even slightly above normal temperatures for western New Jersey in the 6-10 and 8-14 day extended forecast. Our first preview of Summer will arrive on Friday with temperatures well into the 70’s along with some humidity and a chance for thundershowers!
First off let’s talk about the sleet and perhaps light snow that is falling in some areas this morning. Warmer air is moving over our area and that’s causing some light sleet to fall in some areas this morning. It shouldn’t last too long or amount to much. Temperatures are well above freezing in the mid to upper 30’s.
We will remain cloudy today as we wait for the rain to arrive. It should begin raining late afternoon or early evening. Look for periods of rain continuing overnight through most of Friday. While it won’t be raining all the time, there could be heavier periods of rain. No severe weather is anticipated. Look for around 1″ of rain region wide.
After we dry out Friday evening Saturday may turn out to be not too shabby of a day. After that we return to cool and soggy weather Sunday into Monday. then a break Tuesday with more rain to return Tuesday night into Wednesday. What do they say about April showers?
Stewartsville received about 1.5″ of rain yesterday. Of course, the big story was the wind. 41 mph gust in Stewartsville.
Besides the rain and the wind we also had a tornado watch up on Monday. That’s something that doesn’t happen too often. Luckily, no tornadoes were reported. There were some warnings just to our south in Delaware and Virginia.
Looking at the rest of the week cooler temperatures with light periods of rain from time to tome. Believe it or not you may even see some conversational wet snow mixed in northern sections during the colder periods. Let’s hope warmer weather returns next week to make it easier to enjoy the outdoors when we need it most!
First off Happy Easter to everyone that observes! Please take some time today to make sure your home and surroundings are ready for an active weather day on Monday. There is a high wind watch for southern and eastern locations. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this expanded of for another type of wind advisory.
Most areas should see wind gusts on Monday in the 45-55 mph range. There could be even higher gust in exposed elevated locations!
While wind will be the primary threat, we should also receive 1-1.5″ of rain region wide with more to the north
Along with the rain and wind, there will be some thunderstorms especially Monday afternoon. The SPC has placed western locations in a slight risk for severe storms. While the primary threat will be wind and heavy rain, there could also be some hail and weak tornadoes.
I will try and keep everyone updated tomorrow. Never the less, keep an eye to the sky and make sure your weather radio has batteries and working! Keep you cell phone charged too!
