Monday mornings commute is shaping up to be not fun. It looks like snow sleet and freezing rain will move into western new jersey after 3 am Monday morning. It will probably start out as a little snow then quickly go over to sleet and freezing rain. The good news is we should see plain rain by mid day. Also the roads appear to still have plenty of treatment still on them. The bad news is it’s been cold lately and all the surfaces are cold and below freezing. I believe the biggest concern will be icing. The NWS map above shows the potential amount of icing for us: 1/10 to 1/4”

So delay travel if possible Monday morning or leave today/earlier. After that we have a brief cold spell again followed by temperatures return to the 30’s which should hopefully feel warm to us as long as there is no wind!

As mentioned yesterday, we received a dusting (0.2”) of snow early this morning. What I found interesting is the snow looked like little cotton balls or what you find in packing material. Which I found strange since it was plenty cold and I didn’t think there was an warm air aloft which usually result in the tips of snowflakes getting melted off like this.

Today will not be terrible by recent days measure. The snow has moved out of the western new jersey area for the most part. We will see some flurries or snow showers today. High temperatures will be in the upper 20’s to around 30. The winds will pick up a little later on today and be gusty. This will lead to a cold night with lows in the mid to upper single digits.

The weekend will be partly sunny and cold. Saturday more so than Sunday with a high of 20 and 30 respectively.

Out next chance of precipitation will be later Sunday night into Monday. Right now it looks icy. More details will be posted as we get closer.

The overnight low for western jersey was 5 degrees. I’ve only seen below freezing temperatures up north in Sussex county. Yesterday we did receive a snow squall as mentioned and it did drop 0.1” of snow. I tried to record a time lapse video of its arrival but my camera batteries died just as the snow arrived Sad smile

Today will be more of the same. The wind shouldn’t be as bad as yesterday but it will still be there. We should have high temperatures in the upper teens. Tonight should be quite as cold as last night with a low around 11. There could be some late night or early Friday morning snow showers as another clipper will pass to our north on Friday. It’s possible we pick up another coating of snow mostly Friday morning. This will also resupply cold air over the region into the weekend. The next chance of snow will be Monday/Tuesday. More on that as we get closer.

In the past 24 hours we picked up 1.6” of snow from yesterday’s fast moving clipper. This included .3” of snow overnight from a snow shower that passed thru the area.

Tonight is shaping up to be the coldest night of the year and season so far.

A reinforcing shot of cold air will arrive today. This will probably be accompanied by some snow showers or even snow squalls. These could put down a dusting to an inch or so in local spots. Best time for this is mid-day into the afternoon. Wednesday evening and Thursday morning will feature low temperatures in the lower single digits in western new jersey area.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory from 7 pm tonight until Thursday morning.

Thursday will continue to be a cold winter day with high temperatures not being very high: only in the upper teens!

Winter weather will continue into the weekend with the possibility of breaking freezing Sunday or Monday.

Light snow overspread the area in the early morning hours. So far 1/2” of light fluffy snow has fallen. It’s not expected for us to pick up that much more additional. What is important to note is what falls will stay around well into the weekend so even though its cold today, get out and shovel what needs to be done. Highs in western new jersey today will be in the low to mid 20’s.

Wednesday will be a blustery and cold day with scattered snow showers and highs again in the low to mid 20’s. Then we really get cold Wednesday night and Thursday morning with low temperatures expected to be in the low to mid single digits. Thursday will be the coldest day of the winter so far with daytime highs struggling to get out of the teens.

We all knew winter was here and would return. This week it will happen. After a wintry start to November, winter took some time off for December but is now back. After receiving about 1” rain over the weekend, colder air (and wind!) is on the increase. We will see temperatures in the mid 30’s today with some scattered snow showers mostly to the north and west.

On Tuesday a clipper, or fast moving storm system with limited moisture will be snapping through the area. Look for a light and powdery snow to begin around 8-10 am and taper off before dinner time. We will receive 1-2” with a few isolated amounts higher again mostly to the north and west. Here is a graphic from the NWS on expected snow amounts for western jersey area:

The clipper will bring behind it true artic air. We will have some mornings with single digit lows and some days 9Thursday) may not get above 20!

A mixture of snow and sleet should overspread the area my midday. Warmer air will be right behind it and we should be all rain by mid afternoon, early evening the latest. Temperatures have already risen this morning from overnight lows in the upper teens to near 30 degrees. Wind is light but out of the warmer east. This will cause any frozen precipitation that falls to only accumulate on colder surfaces. Look for a light slushy accumulation in southern and eastern areas and up to 1” in the north and west.

The NWS has issues a winter weather advisory for today for Warren, Northampton and further north and west. Hunterdon county is NOT included.

Even though temperatures are rising rapidly this morning, the temperature should drop a little once the precipitation starts. This is know as evaporational cooling. It will last for only a little while then the temperature will continue to rise.

Temperatures tonight will actually rise and be in the upper 50’s by Sunday afternoon! But don’t get used to that yet. Much colder air will rush in Sunday night and Monday causing our temperatures to fall well below normal for the work week ahead.

I’ll post updates if warranted.

More of the same will be in order for western jersey weather today. Clouds will win over sunshine but there will be periods of sun today. Temperatures will be similar to yesterday and be in the upper 30’s. Winds will thankfully be a little less but will be breezy at times.

Saturday will start off cloudy and precipitation could move in as early as mid morning to mid day. The computer models are again bringing in the precipitation faster. It looks to start off a little on the wintry side. I don’t think there will be too much freezing rain but there could be some wet snow or sleet in the beginning. There might even be a coating in the normally colder section north and west.

but make no mistake this will not be a wintry storm. Warmer air will win out and moderate rain will fall Saturday afternoon and night. We look to received 1/2 – 1” of rain ending as showers on Sunday. Highs Sunday will be in the mid to upper 50’s! Enjoy it as much colder weather looks to arrive on Monday. In fact we may not get above freezing for a good part of this upcoming week!
