Severe weather threat for Thursday from SPC

Today is our transition day from nice Spring weather to windy and much cooler conditions. The Storms Prediction Center has placed our entire area in a slight risk for severe weather today. The greatest threat is from strong winds and heavy rain. While there could be some rumbles of thunder, that will not be as bad as the other morning. Look for a line of wind and rain to arrive around midday.

Wind advisory from Noon to 5 pm

A wind advisory is up for our entire area from noon Thursday until 5 pm.

Future wind gusts to 40 – 50 mph

Wind gusts today could be in the area of 40-50 mph! Make sure you secure small object, garbage cans, etc. There’s even the possibility of scattered power outages.

All of this will lead to much cooler weather tonight into Saturday with gusty winds continuing. Saturday will feature partly sunny skies with the winds letting up. Sunday will feature increasing clouds and warmer temperatures in the low to mid 60’s. The rain should hold off until Sunday night into Monday when we will receive another good soaking.

Spring officially arrives on Wednesday late afternoon/evening at 5:58 pm.

The first partial day of Spring 2019 will be a nice one with high temperatures in the low 50’s. Normal high temperature this time of year is 50.

Unfortunately the first full day of spring doesn’t look as nice. In fact it looks to repeat weather that we’ve been seeing a lot of since last year: more rain. A cold front will pass through our area. A storm will form on the southern end of the cold front and move on up to the north east. At first it looked like this storm would mostly stay to the east of our area. Now we may be close enough to it to feel the impact of rain and wind. The worst of it will be to our east. So Thursday is looking like a rainy day with perhaps 2/3 to perhaps 3/4″ or more of rainfall. Friday into Saturday will be cooler and windy. Sunday looks to be the better half of the weekend and kick off spring in a nice way!

Rain forecast for Sunday into Monday

Rain forecast for Sunday into Monday

Rain is still forecast for Sunday into Monday but amounts for western jersey are reduced per the above graphic. But 2″ would still be a much beneficial rainfall. I just hope the trend doesn’t continue and the heavier rain gets pushed to the east…

Rain has made its way to western New Jersey as of mid day

As you can see on the radar above, the far norther and western locations are seeing some sleet or wet snow mixed in. This is mostly at the higher elevations.

Conditions will continue to deteriorate this rest of the day into the evening. Rain will continue to become steadier and heavier and winds will pick up. Stewartsville has recorded a wind gust to 31 at 11:46. There have been wind gusts in the 50’s closer to the shore.

A large complex storm system in the eastern half of the nation is going to evolve into a wind and rain maker for western new jersey area. This is part of the same storm system that brought deadly severe weather to the southeast yesterday.

Look for rain to develop today and become heavier and steadier as the day continues. Look for 3/4″ – 1.5″ of rain in western New Jersey.

Winds will also be a big factor for this storm. We are already seeing wind gusts to near 30 this morning. Look for wind gust to 45 later today into tomorrow. There is a Wind Advisory from the NWS until at least 7 pm tonight.

Since this is late January, we typical think snow when we have strong storms like this. There will be some snow from this system but will be far north and west of western New Jersey. I do expect some sleet to mix in a times especially tonight.

The extended January thaw looks to end before we start a new month.
