early morning flurries in Stewartsville, NJ leave a dusting of snow

Colder weather has returned to our area. A light dusting of snow could be seen in some part of western New Jersey this morning as some pre-dawn snow flurries moved through the area.

Another weak system will be moving into our area tomorrow and could result in more widespread albeit light snow. Some areas could see a dusting to perhaps 1/2″

The above graphic shows the chances of receiving 0.1″ of snow or more tomorrow. Look for the light snow to arrive as early as sunrise and last in some areas to about mid-day. Not all areas will see this. Any minor accumulations should be mostly on colder surfaces.

Looking longer range above normal temperatures should return Friday into the weekend with highs near or slightly above 50. There is a chance of some rain late Saturday into Sunday. Colder weather returns early next week.

So how much did we get with the last snow system? Stewartsville recorded 1.9″ of snow before we changed to sleet then freezing rain. Slightly higher amounts in areas further to the north where the transition took longer to occur.

  inches.

or rain by early Saturday evening before tapering off
  overnight.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Slow down and use caution while traveling.

The NWS snow forecast graphic above has scaled back a little the higher snow amounts due to 1) warmer air arriving to mix the snow with sleet and rain and 2) limited amount of time snow will be falling

My forecast is 2-4″ for the I-78 corridor with amounts closer to the low end. Higher amounts will be further to the north and west where the mix/changeover will take longer.

The National Weather Service (NWS) released its initial snow accumulation map for the Saturday system. After looking at model trends today and other data, I’m in agreement with this map. I’m expecting 2-4″ in our area with higher amounts to the far north and west.

There will be plenty of warm air moving in with this system – so much so that it could actually end as some light rain or drizzle. I expect the snow to start midday Saturday. At some point, it will transition to a mix with sleet from south to north. If, when and where this happens will be studied in the days ahead.

The thought of snow is still hard to believe for many after this past weekend’s unusual warmth. Even today was a mostly sunny day with high temperatures in the low 50’s. But it’s not unusual to receive an accumulating snowfall after so much warmth. Besides, it’s mid-January.

18. December 2019 · Comments Off on Green or White Christmas? · Categories: snow

If you’re the type of person that likes a white Christmas (who doesn’t!), then I suggest you move up you celebration this year to tomorrow. Most areas of western New Jersey received a coating of snow courtesy of the snow squalls that moved through our area Wednesday afternoon.

But that is the last snow that is forecast between now and Christmas. After a very cold spell tonight into the weekend, temperatures will start to warm up on Sunday. In fact, we may be flirting with near 50 early next week. With temperatures like that any snow on the ground now will be long melted.

Historically our area has about a 20% chance of seeing a white Christmas. This year it’s less than 5% 🙁

So I think we’ll all be seeing a green Christmas this year. You can always break out the song to get you in the mood!

Happy Veteran’s Day everyone. Be sure to thank a veteran for their service!

Today will be the last “warm” nice day for a while. We should see filtered sunshine with high temperatures in the upper 50’s to near 60 today.

Light rain moves in tonight probably after midnight. the total amount of rain will be in the 1/4″ category. The bigger story will be the cold air rushing in behind the rain and a weak wave of low pressure that will pass by along the cold front to our south. These should combine to give western New Jersey another rain to wet snow even Tuesday morning.

The timing of the changeover looks to be right around the morning rush from 7-9 am. The roads will probably be fine. If anything accumulates it should primarily be on colder surfaces like lawns and car and rooftops. Look for a coating to no more than 1″, again on colder surfaces.

Areas to the north and the east could see a little more as the northern areas will be colder longer and eastern areas will be closer to the disturbance which could kick back some additional snow before ending.

All of this should be over around mid-day Tuesday. The temperatures begin to plummet and will fall into the 30’s and then the 20’s at night. Wednesday morning will be another potential record cold day with high temperatures struggling to get above the freezing mark! Welcome to January in November!

Rain will move into our area on Thursday. Colder temperatures will also be arriving. Usually, by the time the cold air arrives the precipitation shuts off. That will probably happen again early Friday morning but we all could see some wet snowflakes if you up early enough in the morning Friday. The best chances of seeing anything will be northern and western locations.

But the real story will be the arrival of much colder weather starting Friday and well into next week. The above map shows Friday afternoon temperatures struggling to get out of the 30’s. Combined with the wind chill it will feel much colder.

Cold weather continues right into the weekend with Saturday morning lows well down into the 20’s.

This colder than average weather looks to continue into next week. Once again we go from some days in the 70’s to winter-like conditions…

Monday morning in Stewartsville NJ

6.8″ of heavy wet snow was recorded in Stewartsville. The temperature never really went below freezing here which resulted in the snow being on the wet side.

We didn’t quite surpass the November snow but it was close enough to point out how unique this Winter has been snowfall wise for our area. The two biggest snow events took place in November and March.

Today we will see sun breaking out and high temperatures should be in the mid to upper 30’s to help melt some of the snow from the past two storms.

Snowfall analysis from Sunday-Monday storm

Find your location on the above map to see how much snow you received. Light yellow is 6-8″ Darker yellow is 8″+

Winds will pick up later today and then we get more cold air. We should have high temperatures that are in the 20’s most of this week and overnight lows near 10. Thursday morning might be the coldest with lows around 5. Typically with snow on the ground overnight low temperatures sometimes get lower than forecast.

Make sure you get snow off of any walkways or driveways you care about as they will freeze over later today and tonight.

Local schools are either on delay or closed.

Since the snow was so heavy there might be some tree branches that are damaged or broken so be alert to these.

In what could be the biggest snowfall of the season will get underway later this afternoon. Today will see increasing clouds and somewhat mild temperatures, especially compared to the upcoming week, with pleasant temperatures. The temperatures may result in the precipitation starting off as some light rain or mix of rain and snow briefly. Once the precipitation starts to get heavier and nightfall approaches any mixed precipitation will go over to all snow.

NWS snow forecast

Timing: Look for snow or mixed precipitation to start around 3-4 pm from SW to NE.

Peak: Look for the heaviest snow, perhaps approaching 1″ per hour, from around 7 pm to 1 am.

End: Snow should finish before sunrise

Western New Jersey is in the bullseye of heaviest snow for this storm. Some areas just to the south and east of us may actually see some enhancement from thunderstorm or two. If you hear or see this, you will automatically know your in a bonus snow area and can add on a few inches of snow!

My forecast remains 4-8″ for most areas with locally higher amounts where the heavy snow bands setup.

NWS watches and warning

Winter Storm Warning is in place for all areas of western New Jersey.

After this storm passes, much colder and breezy weather will be in store for the new week. Look at the forecast low temperatures in the single digits Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings!

Make sure you remove any snow from areas that need to have it removed or else it will be frozen solid in place for most of the upcoming week.

Any I hope no one put away the winter coats, scarfs and boot – you will need them this week!

Stewartsville, NJ Saturday March 2, 2019

4.3″ of new snow fell overnight in Stewartsville and surrounding areas overnight. The snow started around midnight give or take and tapered off to flurries around 9 am.

My Spring-time flag didn’t ward off the snow

Our Winter WEather Advisory expired at 9 am this morning. But it will be soon replaced with a Winter Storm Watch that will go in effect at 1 pm Sunday afternoon.

NWS snow forecast for Sunday into Monday morning

The next storm looks to begin in our area Sunday afternoon. This storm will be the biggest and last of the series. For our area this appears to be an all snow at this time. The same areas that received the most snow today look to repeat tomorrow. The good news is the worse of the storm will be Sunday night and early Monday morning before sun-up. I anticipate schools will be closed and traveled delayed for a while Monday morning.

Based an what I’m seeing now I’m going to forecast 4-8″ of snow for the Sunday-Monday storm. The real question is will this be the biggest snow of the season for us? We received over 7″ back in November.

1 year ago today

As we are too aware, March is turning into a new extended winter season for us. The above photo was taken on this date last year. There have been several March’s in the past few years that have been cold and snowy. We certainly will have the cold part next week but I’m anticipating a return to normal and maybe even a warm up starting in around 10 days.
