But like we’ve been seeing a lot lately, we have extremes

We have a drought watch for central and eastern sections of western New Jersey. For all practical purposes it applies for all of the area as it has been bone dry. Last measurable rain was back on the 12th!

As it stands now we have 2 solid chances of rain this week. The first will be Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning. This will be from a cold front approaching from the west that will push out the unseasonable warm and humid weather we now have. This will also pull up some of the remaining moisture from the system that’s been to our south for a while. I’m thinking 1″ from this system.

The second chance will be later in the week into Saturday. The cold front that will pass above will stall to our south. Current thinking is tropical depression 11 which is over the SW Atlantic ocean, will get pulled up into this along with some other moisture to our SW. If this all plays out perfectly, we could see a high amount of rain and even gusty winds. Of course this remains to be seen. But we certainly need the rain. The second system has the potential to deposit several inches of rain.

It may not feel like it later today and tomorrow but Fall 2015 is upon us! Look for high temperatures today near 80 in western New Jersey. Cooler more seasonable weather returns for the weekend as we watch some showers to our south.

Not too much color is in southern western new jersey as of yet. Perhaps a little more color to the north but as discussed yesterday still not too much.

FallFoliage

Our dry September continues. Its been over 7 days since we had our last good soaking and no significant rain is in the forecast.

Is this impacting the leaves? While I’m no expert, I always thought that a dry fall would make the leaves dry up and wither away instead of changing to the annual brilliant colors. But I could be wrong. I know change in he angle of sunlight as well as temperature change, especially differences from day to night also impact leave changes as well. It’s ideal to have cool nights and warm days. We certainly have been having warm days, if not hot, but until recently the nights haven’t been all that cool.

Regardless Fall officially arrives on Wednesday. Ironically it will be milder on Wednesday and Thursday with daytime highs in western new jersey approaching near 80. Cooler weather looks to arrive over the upcoming weekend. There could be some showers early next week or even as soon as Sunday. But it doens’t look like a soaking at this point.
