NWS snow forecast for Saturday night

Confidence has increased that there will be some accumulating snow Saturday night into early Sunday morning. The big questions now is how much. There’s a good chance of warmer air not being too far from western New Jersey – especially eastern and southern locations so that will have to be watched.

Early forecast based on what I’m seeing right now is 2-4″

Until then today will be quite mild. If we can get some sun out today after this fog burns off, we can easily get high temperatures in the upper 50’s to near 60 or better.

Rain will return tonight and last into Friday morning. Friday will then be a transition day starting off near 50 but dropping temperatures as the day goes on. Friday night will be quite chilly as will Saturday by recent standards. The snow should hold off until Saturday evening as it looks now.

Storm threat late Saturday into Sunday

Keeping an eye on the potential for a sneaky fast moving snow threat for later Saturday into early Sunday morning. If the storm will be fast moving so if it does happen will not be the “big one.” It will be another nuisance snow if it happens. Saturday will be colder day compared to Friday – that is where the cold air will come from. If it does happen it should clear out for Sunday.

We’ll continue to keep an eye on this and keep you updated.

...POOR TRAVEL CONDITIONS WITH A BRIEF BURST OF HEAVY SNOW
FOLLOWED BY A WINTRY MIX ACROSS THE I-78 CORRIDOR...

At 830 AM...Moderate to heavy snow has overspread the Interstate
78 corridor in central and northern New Jersey and in eastern
Pennsylvania. Snowfall rates of one inch per hour are possible in
spots during the mid morning before the snow changes to a mix of
sleet and freezing rain from south to north through 10 AM. Most of
the region should see a transition to all freezing rain between
10 and 11 AM.

Plan on poor travel conditions for the tail end of the morning
rush with poor visibility and with snow quickly accumulating on
roads in heavy snow. Icy conditions will follow into the late
morning after the changeover to sleet and freezing rain.

Snow overspreads into western New Jersey

Snow overspreads into western New Jersey

Snow has moved into western New Jersey as of early this Wednesday morning. Look for the snow to pick up in intensity at times. Notice the pink in the bottom of the radar map above along with the green out to the west. This is showing there is warmth moving north into this storm. I expect mixed precipitation to start in southern areas as early as late morning.

I’m still confident of my 1-3″ snow forecast for western New Jersey. There could be a little more further to the north and west where the changeover will occur later.

Updates throughout the day.

NWS Snow Total Wednesday

NWS Snow Total Wednesday

There are some very light flurries falling in part of western New Jersey this morning that will not amount to much if anything. Partly sunny skies should return later today and we will inch above freezing with a high in the mid 30’s.

Clouds will increase tonight and western New Jersey will see snow arriving in the 5-7 am time-frame. This storm will be similar to Sunday’s except we should get more snow on the front-end. Warmer air will be transported into the storm and the snow will mix with, then change to sleet and eventually rain as the day goes on. How fast the mix starts to happen will impact who gets how much snow. Typically southern areas see the mix and changeover first and then it moves slowly to the north and west.

My forecast for snow is 1-3″ for southern locations of western New Jersey and 2-4″ further north close to I-80 with some 3-6″ possible further to the north and west.

Ice forecast for Wednesday

Ice forecast for Wednesday

Since Wednesday is a snow to sleet/freezing rain then rain, we need to think about ice accumulation potential. The map above shows nicely how there is more risk for this happening further to the north but the entire area will see at least some sleet and possibly freezing rain before the changeover to plain rain.

As of mid Tuesday morning, the only NWS watch, warning or advisory out for our area is to the north in Sussex county. I do expect a winter weather advisory to get issued at least for most of western New Jersey at some point today for Wednesday

Congrats to Eagles!

First off congrats to the Philadelphia Eagles football team and their fans! Well played an engaging game to watch which can’t be said for every Super Bowl.

Temperature drop Monday morning

Temperature drop Monday morning

Most schools are delayed this morning in western New Jersey. Good thing as there was a noticeable temperature drop and winds picked up when a secondary cold front passed through this morning. Temperatures are now below freezing and gusty winds. Stewartsville recorded a wind gust to 30 mph at 7:30 am.

NWS snow forecast for Wednesday

NWS snow forecast for Wednesday

Today and tomorrow will be seasonable cold and breezy days with partly sunny skies. Then we need to turn our attention to Wednesday. It looks to be a repeat of Sunday’s weather with perhaps more snow on the front end. Start time of precipitation looks just before the morning commute. Timing out the changeover times will be key and looked at in the days ahead. My early thoughts are 1-3″ of snow before the changeover with more snow to the north.

Snow has started

Snow has started throughout western New Jersey and has left a coating on the ground. I wanted to point out to anyone that is traveling west today into PA that PA has winter weather advisories up. They have a similar forecast to us except the snow will hold on a touch longer.

Warmer air is already starting to show up on radar and it’s raining in Trenton, NJ. We will switch from snow to rain before the game starts.

NWS Radar as of 1 pm

NWS Radar as of 1 pm

Southern portions of our area will start mixing with sleet and rain within the next hour or two. Trenton and Philly are all rain.

Super Sunday

Today’s the day. Lots of parties going on later today so let’s talk about the weather

NWS Snow Forecast

NWS Snow Forecast

Look for snow or a wintry mix to arrive by late morning today. The snow will accumulate to a coating to 1″ before starting to mix with sleet and rain and then changeover to plain rain. The rain could become moderate to heavy at times around kick off and then taper off before the game ends. Further to the north and west could see an 1″ or slightly more before the changeover to rain.

If you’re driving please drive sober and enjoy the day!
