...Icy Friday Morning Commute Possible...

A cold front will move across the area tonight. Precipitation with the front will start as rain, but is expected to change to
snow before ending late tonight or early Friday morning. As temperatures fall below freezing by Friday morning, icy
conditions may develop during the morning commute, resulting in
hazardous driving conditions. Anyone planning to drive early
Friday should exercise caution and allow extra time.

5 Day Forecast

5 Day Forecast

Skies will remain cloudy this Thursday with warmer temperatures today. Look for high temperatures in the mid 40’s. If you have anything outdoors to do today is the time before showers arrive later this afternoon and much colder temperatures are forecast for Friday and Saturday.

NWS snow forecast for Friday morning

NWS snow forecast for Friday morning

Tonight’s rain shower will amount to less than 1/4″ of an inch. If the colder air arrives fast enough, it may turn the rain over to some snow before it ends. I’m not expecting much if any accumulation. My forecast is for a coating to 1″

Friday will be a much colder and windy day. Tomorrow may be one of those days where the temperature does not rise much if any and will start to fall further in the afternoon with gusty winds. Saturday will be cold as well but at least the winds will let up some.

Sunday into Monday snow to rain

Sunday into Monday snow to rain

Then we turn our attention to Sunday as a storm system looks to impact our area. At this point it looks like a snow to rain event as warmer air will get pulled into our area. Snow could start Sunday morning before changing over to rain by around kickoff time or certainly while the game is being played. There could be an accumulation of snow before the changeover. Too early to forecast today but it may be enough to shovel in spots, especially further north and west. Updates as we get closer.

Most of this probably won’t reach the ground but there is a possibility some areas could see some light snow flurries this afternoon as some warmer air moves into the area in the higher levels of the atmosphere.

5 Day forecast

5 Day forecast

Cold night last night with early morning temperatures in the low teens throughout western New Jersey. Today should be mostly cloudy and on the cold side with high temperatures near 30. Temperatures tonight won’t be as cold with the clouds around. Thursday will be another cloudy day with periods of rain arriving. Colder air will be on the march in on the tail end of the rain and we could see a changeover to snow before ending.

NWS Snow Forecast

NWS Snow Forecast for Friday

I know this sounds like a broken record but my forecast for the rain ending as snow early on Friday morning is for another coating to 1″ for western New Jersey. Could be slightly more in northern areas that will changeover sooner.

Cold Friday and Saturday will be in store and then our next chance of precipitation will be late Saturday into Sunday. Right now it looks like a wintry mix. Details as we get closer.

0.9" of new snow was recorded in Stewartsville

0.9″ of new snow was recorded in Stewartsville

Snow is over in western New Jersey except for a few flurries here and there. A coating to 1″ was received in western New Jersey as forecast.

A bigger concern is temperatures are starting to slowly fall this afternoon and are now below freezing in most of the area. Winds will pickup as well and gust 20-30 mph out of the NWS. Any melted snow or puddles could re-freeze later on and tonight if untreated so be careful!

Next system for us will be later on Thursday into Thursday night ending in the pre-dawn hours of Friday. This will be a cold front that will pass and have periods of rain. Depending on how fast the cold air comes in behind the cold front and if/where a low pressure system forms on the cold front will determine who and where any snow will occur. Right now this doesn’t look like a big deal and will be another coating to perhaps a few inches.

After that we need to keep an eye on Super Sunday night for another fast moving system. With lots of folks potentially attending parties, this will need to be watched.

Radar shows steadier snow brushing into western NJ

Radar shows steadier snow brushing into western NJ

The heavier band of snow seen above is now brushing into our area. But it’s moving south and east so should miss northern areas. Section of eastern PA have been getting more benefits of this snow band.

But temperatures are near or just above freezing in Stewartsville so roads are wet and snow is only sticking on colder/untreated surfaces

Light snow has arrived to sections of eastern PA and is slowly moving in our direction. Look for periods of light snow to arrive in the next 1-2 hours.

NWS Snow Forecast

The NWS snow forecast has shifted slightly to the S & W showing most of the snow accumulation in eastern PA especially sections to the West and South. My forecast remains a coating to 1.” Look for the snow to finish by mid afternoon. There will be periods of snow of various intensities. I expect treated roads to be fine

Icy spots overnight

Icy spots overnight

756 PM EST Wed Jan 17 2018

...Icy spots will develop on some side roads, untreated parking
lots and sidewalks overnight across New Jersey, Delaware, eastern
sections of Pennsylvania and Maryland...

Temperatures well below freezing will refreeze some of the
leftover moisture from Wednesday`s snowfall, causing slippery
spots on less traveled pavements and possibly freezing some car
doors shut. Be careful when stepping outside and traveling some of
the side roads or moving through the parking lots.

It will take a while for the sun to begin the melting process
late Thursday morning.
