The threat of severe weather has passed. The rain we received this morning, and the associated clouds, held down our high temperatures today. Warm temperatures is what fuel thunderstorms.
We could have some scattered showers this afternoon. There could even be a rumble of thunder when the actual cold front passes late tonight.
The we get back to reality tomorrow with brisk winds and temperatures in the 40’s.
And then some snow on Friday morning? Tune back in for details…
The NWS has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for southern areas of western New Jersey. This includes Hunterdon and Somerset counties in NJ and Bucks in PA.
As mentioned earlier, it appears the worse of the thunderstorms will stay to our south. But that doesn’t mean that any thunderstorm that makes it to our area won’t turn severe so keep an eye to the SW sky…
Another round of showers and thundershowers approaching western New Jersey
So far Stewartsville receive 1/4″ of rain and on and off thundershowers. Another large area is poised to move into western New Jersey at this moment.
In looking at the wider picture, I’m starting to think all this activity in “round 1” may diminish the threat for our area this afternoon. We are not getting the warm up that was anticipated. This may result in round 2 staying further to our south.

Risk of severe weather for western NJ Wednesday
The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded our risk of sever weather today represented in the map above. The entire western New Jersey area is in a slight rick of severe thunderstorm. However just to our south and west, there is an enhanced risk.
Round one of showers and thunderstorms approaching western New Jersey
There will be two main rounds of showers and thunderstorms today. The first is approaching western New Jersey right now as seen in the above map. None of these storms are currently severe but some do have lightening and heavy downpours.
Round two looks to come later this afternoon.
I would not be surprised to see our area under a watch today
More Severe Thunderstorm Possible on Wednesday
With another warm up today and tomorrow comes the possibility of more severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has issued and slight risk of severe thunderstorms tomorrow for all of western New Jersey. This is similar to what happened last Saturday. the timing right now looks from 3 pm – 8 pm. There could also be some showers in the morning tomorrow.

This system has generated some tornado warnings – one is near Lancaster area…
Showers and thunderstorms approaching from the SW
As seen in the above radar, showers and thundershowers are approaching from PA. The cells are moving from SW to NE. There is a severe thunderstorm watch for Berks county in PA which is near Reading. There are two severe thunderstorm warnings indicated in the yellow above.
Keep an eye to the sky for the remainder of the afternoon and early evening
The Storms Prediction Center has placed all of western New Jersey in a slight risk of severe thunderstorms for today. The greatest risk appears to be from 3 – 6 pm from west to east.
These storms are the result of the unseasonably warm weather we have been experiencing over the past couple of days. Stewartsville reached 77 yesterday!
but all good things must come to an end. Sunday will be closer to normal with temperatures back to the 40’s with breezy conditions. Temperatures should rebound into the 50’s early next week.
A fast moving “clipper” storm system will be moving through the northern sections of western New Jersey later this evening into early Saturday morning. It has the potential to leave a coasting perhaps up to 1″ in the higher elevations of northern sections. This will primarily be north of I-80 event. But I’m mentioning it in case a few snow showers make their way further south. As you can see in the above map it will have a NW to SE flow to the light precipitation.
On Sunday another system approaches up but we will be warm enough for some light rain. It may end as a little wet snow on Sunday night but should amount to much for us. Boston on the other hand looks to get hit again from the Sunday system on Monday for them. Some Bostonian’s may be getting a 5 day weekend!
Long range we need to keep our eyes on Thursday and next weekend.
