…FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING…

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a

  • Flash Flood Watch for southeastern Pennsylvania and much of New
    Jersey.
  • From Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening
  • Showers and thunderstorms will begin to develop around midday
and continue through the afternoon and evening hours. Periods of
heavy rain can be expected with areas of 1 to 2 inches, with
local amounts up to 5 inches possible. These rainfall totals may
occur in a short amount of time, and could lead to flash
    flooding.
  • The risk of flash flooding is highest in urbanized and low-
lying areas. Rapid rises on small creeks and streams are
    possible.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Flash Flood Watch means that there is the potential for flash
flooding which can be life-threatening. Heavy rain is expected to
occur over a short period of time. Rapidly rising flood waters
may quickly inundate roadways and areas of poor drainage. Streams
and creeks could leave their banks, flooding nearby properties.

Please monitor the forecast, especially if you live in a location
that is prone to flooding. Be prepared to take action if a flash
flood warning is issued for your area.

I’m back after taking a much needed week off on vacation. We had some pretty nasty severe weather last week. I hope everyone is making use of the automated weather alerts posted on my site. You need to open them to see the full graphic and information presented.

After a top 5 weather weekend of delightful weather, we return to warmer and more humid weather today and tomorrow. This will lead to a very warm and humid weather day on Tuesday that will generate severe weather and downpours.

As seen on the above severe weather potential map, all of southern NJ is in an enhanced risk area. The SPC doesn’t too often place that risk anywhere near us too often. Even though it’s to the south of western New Jersey, you never know when a stronger storm will develop.

While most of the action will be later Tuesday into Tuesday evening, there could be a few renegade thunderstorms before that time frame tomorrow.

Today looks to be another great day weather wsie with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures in the low to mid 80’s. You will start to notice a return in the humidity as the day wears on.

Keep in mind the Perseids meteor shower peeks tonight. I fear that increasing clouds may prevent viewing at times. Plus we have a near full moon that will make the sky not as dark and make them a little harder to see.

The New Jersey Astronomical Association’s observatory will be open from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. The Paul Robinson Observatory is in Voorhees State Park in Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County
